I use my harbor freight laser thermometer to check oil temp when frying fish or turkeys, checking air temp coming from a/c registers, etc. Plus it works on wheels too. Lol.

We all talk about high temps and issues but two years ago I had a hub with lower than average temp. For three trips I was thinking “I’ve got that hub dialed in, I need to do the rest the same”. WRONG, when I did my spring check I had a broken wire on the brake magnet. No brakes, no heat, not good
Made me smile a little that I am always leaning something: high temps are bad but low temps aren’t good either.

Checked this one on-line at Harbor Freight and it has pretty good reviews. On sale for 19.99 and there is an on-line 25% off coupon good through Dec. 21. Think I'll drive over tomorrow and get one. Thanks for the tip.

There are a few things that one must realize using the laser thermometers. Because IR emissivity values are different for different surfaces, you should always take a reading at the same spot/area at each hub. Color affects the reading as does chemical makeup.

Also, the area that is "read" gets larger as you are farther away. Stay close to your target. Most IR thermometers have a scale on them somewhere showing the target to distance ratio. So stay close. You don't want to skew your readings with a cooler part getting read.

Yes. And the laser is just for aiming. It doesn't actually read the temp as I understand it.

Correct. The laser only allows one to "aim" at the intended target. The shiny silvery lens located near the laser is the actual sensor. It should be kept clean using only a soft rag such as a micro-fiber cloth.
