Tire Blown Unknown
Hello fellow travelers,
So, my wife were traveling from Prineville, OR to North ID a few weeks ago. We stopped in Madras for gas and pulled into Les Schwab to have air checked on TT, a 21’ Mini-lite, and 2011 F150. All was good. About two hours later we were heading down the 84 towards Umatilla when a passerby flagged us down alerting me to a problem.
I pulled over and discovered a blow out on the rr tire the tire was shredded to the rim! Fortunately, the whipping tire did not damage the cabin, and damage to the tire skirting was minimal. I ave two questions to this problem: How could I not know this happened? Is there a tire pressure monitoring system I can install and connect to tow vehicle?

There are plenty of TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitor Systems) out there for towed vehicles. TST is very popular here.
Having said that, the TPMS won't do anything for a catastrophic failure, but it will let you know that it's happened shortly after the incident.

Pure speculation here: perhaps the tire shop lowered the air pressure on a warm tire to the cold inflation spec. This would result in an under inflated tire and blow out.
I run the TST tpms system and love it.

Pure Speculation
I find the situation coincidental. We had traveled from Central Coast CA to OR with no problem. Wife suspects the tire place. I will look into the TST. Thanks everyone; I got what I need!

It's definitely suspicious, and I know a lot of people think that's what should be done. I would be calling and asking what exactly they did. I always check/fill/rotate tires myself. I also run a TST.

Never trust anybody to set air pressure on your tires. Check and adjust yourself when cold.
Any tire shop knows not to adjust warm tires down in pressure. And whether they did or not is a moot point now. You can't prove or disprove anything.
Chalk it up to coincidence and lesson learned.

Never adjust pressure on hot tires. You need a TPMS and then you will be able to see a tire going down. With a lighter trailer you may not even notice a flat tire. I had a tire valve start leaking the other day after adjusting pressure. I guess the valve didn't seal correctly. Put the chuck back on and took it off again and it was ok. If I had not have heard it I would have had a leaking valve going down the road. A TPMS would have warned me when the pressure dropped.
