Tire recommendations after TT blowout?

Last week we are driving on I-90 near Billings MT when the left tire on my 2008 Flagstaff model 205 TT exploded, chewing up the under side of the trailer, along with the electrical, water, and propane systems. The tire was an SECURA ST145R12. I had kept a close eye on the tire pressure. It was a hot day, so pressure would have been about 60 psi. Hard to say it it was overinflated or under inflated for conditions, or if the tire was defective or picked up a nail. Any recommendations as to replacement tires?
Thanks!
John

If you are sticking to ST tires, Maxxis 8008. Otherwise any LT tire that fits and has the load rating you need or greater.

Suggest you educate yourself on tires by reading the post on Why Tires Fail.

I get tired of folks in the tire industry blaming individuals for Chinese made ST tire failures.

There are too many anecdotal reports of ST tires failing that were properly aired up and driven at or slower than 65mph.

I had a brand new ST tire blow on my about 4 miles from the shop that installed the new tires. I personally checked tire pressures before I pulled out of the parking lot. I was at 55mph in moderate traffic when tire blew.

It was my 3rd tire blow out in the past 18 months or so. Haven't had a tire failure since I upgraded to L/T truck tires and I have towed a lot this year.

Get Michelin XPS RIB LT tires and quit worrying.

ST vs LT tires

Sorry to hear about your tire problems. There is a lot of controversy about replacing your tires with LT tires. Mark Polk (rv education 101) wrote a very good article on this issue and it was very helpful in my decision making process on whether to switch. While I value each contributor's feeling and input on this issue, I found it confusing so I did some other research on my own. This article is located at:

https://rvingwithmarkpolk.com/2012/1...s-vs-lt-tires/

I plan to go with the Maxxis tires. There is a very good article on these tires in the Sept. issue of Trailer Life magazine. Happy hunting.

There is no controversy among those who made the switch from ST tires to LT tires.

You are 100% correct, a Michelin RIB LT tire is the way to go if you can afford them and can find them in the required size. The OP stated he had 12 " tires, without checking, I do not think Michelin makes a 12" RIB tire.

Good catch. I just glossed over the size. Looks like Maxxis m8008s only go down to 13". But Carlisle makes a 12" ST so that would be my second choice for STs.

I recommend Hercules. I also liked maxxis but in my opinion, Hercules is more readily available if you do need to replace one. There are dealers all over that carry them or can get them from their warehouse so you can get back on the road.

We went from 5th wheel to Winnebago View to 2016 REV RB.
After blowing way too many tires, and having them replaced under recalls and warranties, we found out one of the main reason that TT tires fail.

When you drive all day then back and turn sharply into a campground spot or your driveway, it's twisting the tread on the bottom of the tire. The tires are at their hottest, and it breaks the tread away from the tire on the inside. It doesn't show from the outside. Goodyear replaced all of our tires because of a defect that showed up from doing that. Leave the next day on the highway and that tire will come apart.

Tony, What did the tire dealer say when you brought the tire back?

RE "Tire blew" Was it a belt/tread separation or Sidewall run low flex failure? Have a picture? What was the DOT serial?

Tire Recommendations

Nothing wrong with the Carisile ST series tires although most will recommend the Maxxis. Just upgraded from the "D" series to the "E" series 235/75/P15 with no problem and the trailer seemed to handle better.

I've considered this to be part of the cause of my several tread separation blowouts. I back into a sharp 90° spot at home but make sure to pull up and back again to get the torque off the tires.

Don't forget that it is the air pressure that supports the load not the tire. You will only get the benefits of increased load margin if you run higher then the LR-D 65 psi

Yep... Guess we'll just have to wait until hovercraft or anti-gravity RVs come out so we don't have to use tires

Wild... Great observation on Hovercraft. Perfect example of air pressure supporting the load and not the side "airbags"

Not sure about "anti-gravity" Would need to test.
