Tire temp and pressure when towing.

Does anyone have a link or know what an average increase in tire pressure and in tire air temp should be when towing? Now that I have a tpms I get to see all this info. Maybe to much info. Lol

I have seen as much as 10# and a 30º rise in pressure and temps. Sunny side of the RV will always be higher than shady side.

The folks at TST told me 20% rise max on pressure and 157* max on temp. I have LR E tires at 80 psi and the monitor is set to warn me above 96 psi. The temp limits are still set as it came out of the box at 157*[I think].
We saw 91 psi last year coming back from the FL Keys, but never got any higher. Temp maxed out at 102* on the sunny side.

I carry a Klein infrared temp gun with me any time I'm traveling. Every time I stop, I'll get the gun out and "shoot" the tires and wheel hubs. I'm not as interested in the specific temp as I am if one tire/hub is markedly higher than others. So far, they are always in a relatively narrow range. I've never seen tires higher than 136, hubs always cooler. The spare is always cooler yet....

I would notice a rapid increase in temperature on my passenger side when climbing a long grade. Had me worried the first couple times, until I realized that it was the exhaust from my truck.

Same here for my TST 507 system. Also, I have noticed that the right side runs a bit higher than the left if the road isn't very good; I think the rougher shoulder and edge of the road will raise the temp 2-3 degrees. LOVE the tire monitor system! I wouldn't think about towing without one anymore! We saw another 5th wheel last week out in the middle of NM with a blown tire and damaged wheel well. $$$ and a pain when you aren't close to repair shops.

I am using the Truck System Technologies (TST) TM-507SE for my Rockwood TT. Amazon. Easy to set up, check Youtube for a couple of videos that will clarify setting ranges. Highly recommend anyone towing have a system. There are others as you will see.

Also recommend changing out your rubber valve stems on the tires for metal ones if you add a TPMS system. While the sensors are not heavy, they are still spinning at a pretty good rate which stresses the rubber stems, not to mention rough roads make them wiggle pretty good I would imagine.

I use the EEZtire System. It has worked great. you get some drops from the tire monitors but they pick back up in about 5 mins if they do drop off.

Very easy to setup and no need for an extender/repeater even with a 37 ft TT.

With the TST 507, I found it would drop contact occasionally when I had it suctioned to the windshield. Not wanting to spend $50 for a booster, I moved the unit to the left rear door window of the PU and it hasn't lost contact since. My DW keeps an eye on it while we travel and lets me know the pressure/temps if they look off. One thing about it, if it senses that pressure is down you will know...it is pretty loud! You can check for yourself by unscrewing one of the sensors from a tire and it sounds off. Also the TST battery life lasts several days when traveling.

I just got my 507 out for the first time last weekend and I gotta say it was nice seeing the pressures up and temps stabilized. I previously called TST and they recommended 10% low and 20% high or even 30% high if it is hot out. The recommendation is to leave the temp setting to default.

Some guys have posted seeing higher pressure and temps on side of the truck exhaust when pulling long grades, I noticed a slight increase. Probably is n/a for motorhome unless pulling a trailer.

I noticed sun side as much as 5 degrees more than shade side. Ambient temp was as high as 88 mid-day and I saw trailer tires go from 50lbs to as high as 58lbs and ran up as high as 100 degrees temp. I was cruising @ 58-60mph with short bursts to 65 to make a run on a hill. I also ran it with the rubber stems but will upgrade to metal stems soon.

Based on my observations one can expect a 10-20% increase which, according to tire mfgr's. info, is factored into the tire's ratings.
