Cost of manufacturing mostly. We as consumers want everything for cheap and big wages to boot and those 2 things are mutually exclusive. So the manufactures choose to make cheap so we will buy and they can still make money. There are some decent tires out there that are not US made like the Maxxis tires, some sizes of GoodYear Marathon's are US made (my ST205/75/15 Marathons are made in China) And lets not forget that just because something is made in China does not mean it is junk.

It's also important to note, that even if the tires are made in the US, alot of the rubber comes from China or Thailand. In my current role at work, I do alot with sourcing contracts for aircraft tires and alot of tire manufacturer's purchase rubber from overseas even if they were put together in the US.

I completely agree though, it's a shame there is very little US made tires among other things as well.

You missed the part about shear corporate greed, when production gets moved in favour of cheap labour one would expect the price to drop, it didn't so where are the savings going!

And companies do not always off shore production when searching for cheaper costs. A recent article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram said that a railroad engine manufacturing company is moving their factory from Erie, Pa to Fort Worth because their Erie plant was outdated and the engines could be produced cheaper here.

So far have put 4000 miles on tires that came with 5 er....no noticeable wear in 9 months....talked with lionshead, the FR supplier and they were very nice....probably will replace with maxxis....in 3-5 yrs....hope you have good luck....but with tires I feel we make our own luck by keeping speed under 60 mph, weight around 80% of max, and cold tire pressure at max....and protect them from uv and elements...

Have Discount Tire order them for you. They have them in their warehouses.

I am getting the Carlisle's from Americas /Discount tire. They recommended them over Maxxis.

Off-shore is not automatically inferior. Rubber compounding is a known science, and the quality of tires can be affected by a lot of variables.

You may want to consider looking at Yokohama's Avid Ascend series. These tires are compounded using Orange oil, resulting in better grip, lower rolling resistance (increased fuel mileage), and longer wear. If these qualities appeal to you, it may be worth the slight extra cost. I think currently they're only available in 15/16/17 inch sizes.

Why did they recommend them over the Maxxis? FWIW I have Carlisle's right now and they have been fine for me, but just interested if they gave any specifics for their recommendation.

Then I would find a different dealer. I haven't had much luck with Carlisle tires.

The dealer I purchased from only sold Carlisle. When I asked if they had a different brand they responded with a no. They also said that they had no warranty problems with Carlisle tires. This was 3 years and 18,000 miles ago. My Carlisle's still look like new. I always check and adjust air pressure in the morning before I start to travel and I have tire covered when not traveling. I also keep my speed down. I always laugh when I read on this site people who want to drive 70 or 75 miles an hour with their trailer. Then the same people are complaining that their tires has a blow out. Slow down speed and pressure are the enemies of trailer tires.

As a consolation prize, Carlisle started as a USA company. I think it still is. I worked for them back in the '80s.
