TPMS's are great. I have one on all of my vehicles, as standard from the factory, and I have them on my current trailer. I just know what info it provides, and that they in no way alleviate the need for careful & regular tire inspection.
I agree completely with your statement about inspection. I also think that trailer tires are pretty crappy in general. I still question the validity of the NTSB's data because I would think that the majority of tire failures aren't reported, therefore flawing the data. Maybe you have inside information demonstrating that not to be the case?

I think you are correct. I have looked at the NTSB and they don't talk specifically about rv trailer tires but do say that a majority of blowouts are due to under inflation. NTSB leans toward commercial vehicles and automobiles.

Don't recall anyone saying they recalled tires for underinflation.

I have the TST 510RV on all 6 tires on my motorhome. It is something that gives me a little peace of mind while driving down the road with my 26,000 lb rig.
I can continuesly monitor all 6 tire pressures and temps.
I have a low psi set to warn me as well as a high pse and high temp alarms.

I now have 16,000 miles and feel it lets me drive with more confidence that I don't have a slow leak or overload my tires.

Only have 4 507's but I agree with every thing except overloading condition and that's not monitored by any TPMS system I've heard of. LOL Just ribbin' you Iggy!

I am all for TPMS. My old Daily Driver had it, and I bought the sensors for my snow tire/wheel combo. I caught a few slow leaks and one major puncture while driving in a snow storm. With the major puncture, I was able to safely get off the road while there was still some air left in the tire (about a 5lb/min leak)

I know you are joking.
My tires are at 100 psi cold
When running 65 mph my front get up to 103 psi
My duallys inthe rear run 107 -109 psi
That way I known if I have any stowaways when I leave Arizona to California.

Who in their right mind would want to stowaway and leave AZ to go to CA? OK, maybe Turbs.

How does one "raise their hand" in these fora?

If the only thing a TPMS system did was to alert you to a catastophic failure they would be worth it. How much damage is done to trailers by tires that have failed when the driver does not realize it? Most people don't know they have a flat until a passing motorist points back to the trailer. By then, there could be a $1000. damage to the trailer from the tire beating against it. I'm all for my TST 507 system and feel much better knowing I have it.

Thanks to everyone for the discussion. I'm definitely getting a system now. If for no other reason for the total failure of a tire. I did not check the tire pressure before we left Wednesday and it may well have been low. I did my final walk-around before pulling and the tires didn't "look" low. Now, I'll gauge them every time just to be sure....at least until my TPMS comes in.

The discussion that ensued from this question is exactly why I love this site so much. I've been doing this for a month now, and to hear from folks that have done this for years is invaluable!

Thanks again to everyone! I'll post again when my TPMS system comes in.....

Data to back this contention up?

Don't believe you can find anything even referencing it on the NTSB website.

If you want to read the installation and owners manual on this system before buying, go to Great RV Products

I just ordered the 4 sensor 507 TST system with the repeater (just to be safe). I will likely order 6 more for the truck later. I was really wanting to know what is going on back there.

Thanks for the discussion folks!

Cool! You won't need the repeater but I guess you can return it.

Don't think you'll need the repeater, mine will read over 50' away from the trailer.

Passthrough allows you to add air without removing the sensor.

I just saw that they have in tire sensors now.

507 is their model number. The pass-through mean you can put air in or let are out without taking of the sender unit. On their other model, you actually have to take off the sender to add air. From where I ordered, there is no difference in price, so not sure why they kept the old, non-pass-through model.
