TST 507 TPMS....A Review

I ordered a 4 channel/tire Truck System Technologies 507 TPMS tire pressure monitoring system from TechnoRV - The RV Technology Specialists ... with the best service! . Great price, free shipping and I had it in two days!

PACKAGING:
Nicely done with lots of extra O rings for when you need to change the batteries in the tire sensors in a year or so.
A cigarette lighter cord and a hard wired cord is included.
A dash board mount and a suction cup window mount is included
Three different installation instructions are included. Seems they kept writing instructions to make it easier. The single sheet that looks like the last iteration was the easiest to follow, along with the TST YouTube video. TechnoRV also has a video on their web site to aid in programming.

SET UP / PROGRAMMING:
I suggest you view the number of YouTube videos available (Google Search) before you do anything. The programming is a bit confusing as it uses a relative few buttons to do multiple functions. If you go slow and be deliberate, it is quite easy. If you can't figure it out, this is why God invented 12 year old grand children!

OPERATION:
I only installed it on my pick up truck. I'll order sensors for the trailer once I'm sure it is accurate and robust enough.
Sensors were programmed and installed on the four tires. I did not replace the rubber valve stems with steel as suggested by others. Reports from others is that the sensors are so light they do not add stress to the valve stems. I agree. Time will tell.

The kit is available with standard (you must remove to add air) and "Flow Through sensors that you can add air without removing the sensor. I went with the NON-Flow Through sensors. I'll have to remove them to add air if needed. Time will tell if this was a good decision. But on my truck the valve stems are about 90 degrees perpendicular to the tire and I had concerns that the longer "Flow Through" sensors might get damaged on curbs or when I take the truck on rough roads.

The system came up and started to send PSI and TEMP immediatly. To test it, I lowered the air pressure and raised it with my compressor and in both cases the reported PSI was extremely accurate and the alarm sounded at low and high PSI parameters I set. The temperature is reading the exact same from each tire (37 degrees in their static state)

The interesting thing is the monitor is sitting here in my office, some 100' from the truck, through a number of walls and an aluminum garage door and it is reading fine. This leads me to believe that it will easily work on a relatively long trailer tow vehicle combination.....If not, an amplifier/repeater is available to boost the signal from the trailer.

All in all I'm very impressed with the quality of construction and performance. The monitor has the feel of a well built cell phone. Nice glass or heavy plastic screen, I can't tell which. Brass antenna connections. Very secure power cord plug/jack.

The tire sensors include anti-theft collars that I chose not to use. Maybe I trust folks too much. We'll see

You can read all about it here:

TST RV Tire Pressure Monitors

Hope this helps if someone is thinking about getting a TPMS

My -507 TST system saved a truck tire last summer when a stem started leaking while we were in a restaurant. Came out to find an alarm condition. We were a thousand miles from home, and towing a trailer.

Long story short, a local tire shop took off the spare the next morning and put the truck's tire back on with a new stem installed in it.

It was a minor inconvenience instead of a desolate roadside stop to put the spare in place of a ruined tire.

Money well-spent for the peace of mind.

While it is a good system, the battery is not terribly well sealed by the o-ring. This is probably because the actual housing around the stem does not have much in the way of sealing and moisture can get in that way. I have had two stop working because the battery corroded and shorted out - probably due to the amount of salt used on the roads here (both worked fine again after a new battery and a good cleaning).

I had left them on full time but decided that I'll now take them off at the end of each season and give the battery compartment a thorough cleaning. Since our season is May to October, that will double battery life. Not decided whether I'll remove them if more than a few weeks between trips (which would extend battery life further since they stop sending when at 0psi).

Had them for 2 years. First year on my 24ft TT, then moved them to the 32ft 5er. Last summer got an alarm for one of the 5er tires and luckily I was one exit away from a Discount Tire store. Turned out to be a loose valve stem. Discount Tire tightened, checked balance and remounted (Free of course, wow).

I started to notice on long hot trips that occasionally, outside interference would cause me to loose signal for the passenger side trailer tires (monitor is mounted far left of driver side). TST recommended their wireless repeater ($50 ouch). I got it and plugged it inside the 5er at the bedroom's nightstand 12v socket(you can just hardwire it to your trailer battery, I like being able to unplug when not towing).

Problem solved, I no longer lose signal. In all fairness, it could have just been the batteries were getting weaker. Only get the repeater if you need it. I think most won't. If you do need it though, it does what it's supposed to.

TST 507

I've had the monitor and one sensor replaced, their warranty is outstanding. one thing I will say is that their digital tire gauge is not accurate and changing batteries very hard to do without damage. Just ordered a 15" Milton truck gauge, simple and made in USA

I have replaced all my batteries at least twice, and have not found it a problem, but I'm up for a warning.

What kind of damage happened, and do you know how or why?

Mine should be delivered tomorrow. I went with the smaller shorter sending units because the other would stick out past the tire and a curb strike could happen. The smaller ones are not pass-thru though. I've read many posts on the forum and these guys stand behind their products and offer exemplary cus service.

Springer Pop, I took the cover off { this is the tire gauge were talking about } took the foam cover off the batteries so how tight they were buried in the flimsy plastic hold, started to pry them a bit, decided I'd rather have a Milton gauge because this thing was always 2 or 3 lbs different then tire monitor.

I had a lengthy conversation with TST personnel (nice bunch) about the differences in their units (different numbers, etc.). I learned from them that the 510 (I think that's the number) does not have user replaceable batteries. They have a more robust battery (supposedly mil spec) and put out a stronger signal. They said it was rare that one would need the signal repeater. Those batteries are supposed to be good for five years. I forgot to ask if the sensors were removed during extended periods of non use if the battery life would improve. They have to be sent back to the company for replacement.

I'm getting the non replace battery unit. I figure in five years something better will come along (or I'll be old enough to the point that I don't want to go camping).

we have the same units and they work great. i got the 6 sender pkg and put the extra senders on the spare tire at back of trailer . about 50' from the control unit and on the spare for the pickup. they all come in good but the spares do take longer to regester after starting up for first time after sitting for a over night or longer, guess the need to be moved or bounced in to action. i had new metal angled valae stems put on the TT so the larger blocks of the fill thro would not stick out past the wheel edge.

We LOVE our 507 and would never tow without it. You get peace of mind knowing all the pressures and temps. If there are any anomalies the warning horn blows. It has saved us numerous times. I ordered directly from TST. They offer tech support from about 6:00am to midnight. We called them with a question around 10:30pm one night and got a human to ask our question. They are located in Georgia. I recommend them very highly.

OLd Bob, Good write up, but I pretty sure the only reason your reading the sensors in your office at 100' away is because you are only reading the last reading it took. Try to turn it off and back on again in your office, I don't think it will pick up the reading. I could be a 100% wrong, but it happened once to me when I left it on it was still getting a reading a half block away. I find mine to be very accurate to plus or minus 1 or 2 PSI. Also I had the same corrosion problem as Dave said in post #5. But easy to clean up when you replace the batteries. The non- flow through might not have that problem.

Good call on the distance issue. I turned the monitor off. Brought it into the office and after a half hour turned it back on. It registered the current temp and pressure. About 100' away.

One of these days I am going to ask them how the processor decides that it has lost a transmitter. I think it wails if it get signal from some but not the others. I love the thing as it has taken a lot off my mind. If you have had a blowout...you never forget it! Agonized over the flow through vs smaller units and went with the smaller ones for size and inertia issues.

However, it turns out that once you have a TPMS...you seldom need to air up or check the pressure as that is what it is for. Mine complains some days about the passenger side rear tires. I finally started putting it on the kitchen counter. I will call me if it needs me anyway.

I also am planning to buy this system soon. I have a question, can you use these (non flo thru)with the rubber valve stem? My rig came this way but I plan on changing to metal valve stems next year when I replace the tires.
Thanks,

Bob

That's what I use on my tires. I started out with rubber valve stems and now I have metal stems on camper. I took the locks off mine, it makes it easier to take them off and on when I have to air them up

I had the 507 system on my 5er and will probably put it on my GTown but haven't done it yet. The system will let you know if a battery gets low or loses connection. The temperature sensor portion is affected by ambient temp more so than tire temp, (sunny side vs shaded side, truck exhaust). On a long climb the passenger tire temps would increase about 10 degrees from my truck exhaust. This had me puzzled first time it happened.
