Where to buy tires (tire dealer/rv dealer)

I will need to purchase four new tires for my trailer in the near future. While I had my car at the Discount Tire dealer, they said that they can install the tires for me. They gave me a good price on the Goodyear trailer tire.

Question: Is there any difference between how a RV dealer installs tires and a regular tire dealer? Any comments.

I don't believe there's any difference on tire installation. Remove old tire, mount and ballance new tire, install and torque to specs. I got mine from Discount tire.

Make sure you ask them if they can balance them. When I put new tires on my 22', (which isn't big), I was surprised that several tire places could not accommodate a trailer. I ended up at America's Tire, who where great!

You might be surprised to learn a lot of RV dealers don't mount tires, or have the equipment/personnel to do it. They just take the wheels off the trailer and run them over to their favorite tire shop. Of course they don't tell you this.

Make sure they put the tire pressure you want in them and the high pressure (100 PSI) steel or brass shank stems. You will want a tire pressure monitor system one day and the sensors will bend the rubber ones over and bang the sensors on the rims. Bent over like that will cause them to leak over time.

Before I was a teacher I helped manage Discount Tire Stores. A very honest company and very able and knowledgeable. I'd say they are equal or better to any RV dealer when it comes to tires and wheels and they will meet or beat anybody's price as well as allow you to get free repairs, rotations and road hazard at any dealer. We even took care of customers who were on the road and had to do something at a non-Discount store. They brought us the bill and if possible old tire and we reimbursed them. Now that is service!

I would also ask them to try their best to get US or Canadian made tires with a date not older than 6 months.

I use discount tire all the time for my truck,rv and boat tires. They are awesome. I will not buy anywhere else. I buy the warranty on the tires. If they blow out or come apart you are covered. I have had a few tires replaced on my rv due to road hazzard issues and there were no problems!

local ford dealer sells tires, and i havent found anybody to beat or even match their prices. recently replaced tires on 08 duramax with michelin mtx(?) 70xxx mile tire for under 950 bucks. that was mount, balance, dispose, tax and "shop fees" (whatever those are). even the big name big box tire dealers couldnt match or wouldnt match their price. i was quoted prices at least 200 more than the ford dealer and in 1 case almost 400 more.

i was skeptical at first too, but i bit. i wont shop anywhere else for tires now.

my local rv dealer said he had put nitrogen in my trailer tires. or as stated earlier, he may have had it done somewhere else. but anyways, i work around nitrogen anyway and i understand the advantages of using nitrogen. my question is this: does discount tire use nitrogen?

I got 4 of these on my camper this year. They show up well packaged, mounted, balanced, and at the right pressure.
They have other common sizes, and you can also get them mounted on Aluminum wheel too.
You can get the tire alone, but it will only save $24, and you'll have to pay someone to dismount, mount, and balance it, not to mention your time waiting for it.

i do concur. same as buying diesel. i go to a place with a high turnover of inventory. just like bread.........fresh.

The sun (UV) is the killer of trailer tires. I doubt any place is storing tires out back in the sun. Not willing to pay nearly double for tires, for a recreational vehicle that i use for a few trips a year. etrailer is a huge company that does a lot of business. There was no settled dust on these tires/wheels.

I recommend them, although there is no way to ask them to physically check the date code for you, before they ship to you. If you need that assurance, then you are right, and the extra cost will be worth it to you (I suppose).

dwaynerz I also buy tires from my Ford dealer and have had the same experience. Also For dealers honor the road hazard and tire warranty.

I have a related question, if I add regular air to a nitrogen filled tire, do I lose all of the benefits of the nitrogen or is it proportional? (Amount of air vs nitrogen)

IMO any tire that your going to drive over 25 mph (give or take), it is worth the added little expense for a balance.

They charged me 16.oo per tire to balance them...totally worth it. If they aren't balanced, then you could have uneven wear, then you have to pay for new tires.
