Who makes my axles?

Who makes the axles for stealth Evo 2850? It's a dual axle setup.

After crawling underneath, found out that manufacture is lippert. Stamped right on each axle is GAWR of 3500. Ok but my max weight is 7746.

So that puts me over by 746 lbs of weight.

Then there are the C rated tires at 1820 ea (7280)lbs. there again- over weight.

So, did I buy a trailer with axles and tires that cannot support the max weight?

Your tongue weight needs to be deducted from gvw


I'm assuming your tongue Weight is around #800


Same with tires as your vehicle caries the additional weight

Your GVWR is a calculated figure of axles weights and tongue weight. Your tongue carries 10-15% of the weight

For the most part all of them are.
Which is why many people should weight there units fully loaded for camping.
I bet most would be shocked that there units are overloaded.
Especially since normal user added items are in the #1000 range.

Which in your case is only 200 lbs away from being over loaded.

If they put 4 k axles under a camper with a gvw of #7000 people would think they could use that extra 1 k,
so they put the appropriate axle under it to discourage that.

These units are engineered very tightly to fit them into what most people tow them with. The axles are right at what is required; but so are the frames and wall structures.

If you replaced the axles with stronger units you will NOT change the maximum weight they will carry since the frame and side walls would also need to be stiffened to carry the extra load.

The GVWR is a dance to try to give the most "features" at the LEAST possible weight. That means structure has to be at a minimum to keep the towable weights low.

Cabinetry is designed with the minimum amount of wood; the frame with the minimum amount of steel, the axles the minimum amount to carry that designed weight; and the axles/tires sized for the targeted GVWR less that carried by the tongue/pin.

If you want to "tow with your 1/2 ton," there are choices that have to be made.

If they engineered a trailer that can safely handle 1000 pounds more than the GVWR; they would increase the GVWR so that they could market it that way.

I think it's to save money. My 1,500 lb. 2007 Starcraft has 3,500 lb. axles.
My 3,000 lb. (GVWR) 2012 Coachmen has 3,000 lb. axles.

I see no downside to putting better/stronger axles on. You put on higher load-rated tires, right?

It is on the TT to do list to move up to D range tires. But then I need to find out if the wheels can handle the 80 lbs pressure.

Quite possibly not.
Look for ratings on the rim.

If they are 14's like mine are, VERY difficult if not impossible to find a D rated tire in a 14 radial. I searched e bay a while back and ended up buying more C rated tires. Most are also made in China as well!!! Randy

My last unit had 14's and bought some khumo's 857 D rated from tire rack- liked them a lot. Had to go from a 205 to a 195 though-not a huge difference.

We have a goodyear dealer right down the road from our house. Was in there a couple of days ago with my son to get an alignment on his MR2...asked the manager about RV tires. Was delighted to find out that:
1. Yes Goodyear makes RV tires
2. The tires are one of the last brands to be made in the USA!
3. They offer a replacement hazard warranty!

Oh, forgot to mention that Goodyear offers a G rated tire - that is a lot of tire for a Ultra Lightweight (Tire Size: LT235/85R16 Max Load at 110PSI is 3750 )

D range tires are 65 PSI and your steel rims should be OK.
E range tires are 80 PSI.

That's because the trailer's total original GAWR is the limiting factor - or weakest link. Unlike axles, tires have variable parameters - lose a little air pressure causes loss of load capacity. It's always nice to have a little extra load capacity in your tires.

But where does it stop?

Upgrade the tires; GVWR does not change; payload stays about the same.
Upgrade the axles; GVWR does not change, BUT payload goes DOWN due to heavier axles.
Upgrade the frame; GVWR STILL does not change because the walls are not built to handle the stress of a heavier load, PAYLOAD goes down even more.
