A couple of local state parks that we go to has places every so many sites to dump grey water for tent campers. The sign says "grey water only" this is in Ohio. Going outside tomorrow and read the stickers on my tanks. I know that my grey and black tanks have the same sticker. Jay

If you search back in the woods at those Ohio state parks you'll find the pipe from those gray water receptacles daylights out back in the woods. That is unless the campground has some full hookup sites and a nearby sewer line. Either that or it drains into a gravel bed or the storm water system that also ends up dumping into the woods. Lots of places have that arrangement.

Since we are going that way, California State Parks, a majority of them had the grey water receptacles in their campgrounds, but they were removed years ago. Some Forest Service campgrounds used to have them, now they are gone too. Cost for maintaing was surely a reason for removing them, not the preservation of the campgrounds. Oregon State Parks have grey water receptacles for draining in many of their campgrounds, I don't know where the grey water ends up. I do know that campers dump their cooking leftovers on the grates of the receptacles and that leaves a stinky mess, also the drains are clogged by food particles and grease. All people have to do is scrape the food leftovers into trash bags, as far as the bacon grease, a concerned camper should always have a can or jar to pour the grease into so it can be deposited in the trash (sealed of course).

I think we have strayed off topic, it would be an interesting new thread though. I do not understand why having a larger black water tank is less important then a grey water tank. I can shower out side (oops, by using that installed outside shower I am violating park rules, but maybe not if I don't use soap). There are numerous ways to conserve water usage so that the grey water tanks do not fill so quickly but not so with the black water tank. It is hard to conserve what nature dictates and it requires water to help dissipate the solids. I spent my career enforcing laws, I do not believe in double standards nor do I advocate desecrating our lands, public or private. Two, maybe three more days with a 40 gallon tank instead of a 32 gallon tank, big deal when you got to pick up and move to dump. Even when at a full hook up site, easier to dump grey water then black water, no chemicals or cost every time you dump.

PLEASE!!! Do NOT start another thread. We've got at least 4 of them already. Here's one:

Heading back toward the topic.... I checked under my unit today. (2504s). Sure enough I have 2 of those tanks that Mr. Havercamp listed. One black, one grey. FR lists my tank size as 30 gallon,Mr. Havercamp as 33 gallons. I have never measured but I wish my grey was bigger. So far we are getting by just fine on this size black tank. Jay

I guess now the thread will warp into a campfire/no campfire discussion or an I came to a campground with fire rings and I should not have to smell your smoke, especially burning bacon grease discussion? LOL
Personally I save the bacon grease to dip donuts in the next morning.

I am not going to start a new thread on dumping grey water, but I do want to thank all of you that have taken the time to post your advice and opinions, all are appreciated. The humor is especially appreciated, not sure why but discussions can take an ugly turn and those who "lighten up" the talk are doing us all a favor.

You came down with COPD from burning the bacon grease. As far as blockages requiring a coronary bypass, they are prevented by a high bacon diet. However, reading threads about gray water, diesels, rear bumpers, tires and rims, bearings, tow ratings, and warranties all contribute to a whole host of medical problems the largest of which is forumitis, a type of insanity. The only cure is a full frontal lobotomy, consuming plenty of alcoholic beverages on a daily basis, or smoking Scooby snacks.

I have had the full range of RV's over many years, including tent, VW Westy, campervan, Class C & A, and currently a camperized van with small combined grey/black about 20 gal, also limited FW tank capacity. We do a fair bit of dry camping for 2-4 days at a time so generally conserve water. Wash dishes outside then "strain" the dishpan water into another bottle to remove food waste. This water is then used to extinguish the campfire safely and of course is not in large quantity, maybe 2 dishpans a day. Has always worked for me. Of course we dump the actual tank at proper facilities. Sometimes small tankage can be worked around quite well. In packed campgrounds, which we try to avoid, I'll save that water up then dispose of it in a campground bath facility, since we usually have freshwater supply at the site, hence unlimited water to put out fire etc.
