G Rated Tire Upgrade

Don't know if i have the right forum or not but here goes. I have a 2002 7.3L F250 w/ towing package. Believe this is about the same as a F350 single axle as I have the same # springs and same drive train/engine. I also added air bags for level and agree that it makes for much smoother ride without bottoming out when you hit the unfriendly roads.

I pull a 2010 3625RT 39' 5er. On the return trip I blew a Goodyear E rated tire and took out the faring as well. I don't think it's a weight issue but don't want to take any chances. Does anyone know if the wheels will support a G rated tire? I looked at the Cardinal site but couldn't find a contact us to ask the question direct. I really don't want to buy wheels to add to the $300+ price tag of the Goodyear Unisteel .

Thanks, Stan

The E rated tires max PSI is 80 psi and the rims as well and the G rated tires require 100 PSI and the rims you have on your trailer will not withstand that amount of pressure. So you would also need to buy new rims if you purchase G rated tires. Be aware they are having problems with blowouts on the Goodyear G614 tires.

Well heck fire. You're just full of good news!! I thought G's would be the answer to my woes. And I sure thought the rims would be okay. Any suggestions on what might be a better E rated tire than the Goodyear Marathon?

Thanks, Stan

Check with FR and see if your wheels will take the 100# or the wheel mfg. Most have a pretty good tolerance on pressures.

Yes,
Depending on what axles you have under your fiver I would give serious consideration to 17.5 inch upgrade. They will get you a tire with a load rating in the range of 4500 pounds each. More than enough for even the largest of fivers on the road today. If you have to buy new wheel anyhow, the price difference would be negligible up front.

sg6923 You asked about E rated tires. I am running Michelin LT tires on my 2004 29 WB trailer but it is much smaller than yours and several hundred pounds lighter. I will not run ST tires on my trailer. It is my opinion that the ST sidewalls do not stand up to the weight and bouncing stress that we put on the trailers going down the road.

I do not have any scientific knowledge behind my opinion only just over 50,000 miles on LT tires no problem while I had three issues in less than 2,000 miles on the original ST tires that came on the trailer!

Thanks to everyone!! With your help I was able to reach Cardinal for help. I was told y the rep that he was 99.9% sure I could not upgrade to G's from E's due to wheel limitations but he told me where to look; on the inside of the wheel on the hub side. Well, he was wrong. The wheels are rated 3750 @ 110 psi. G's are on there way. now, if I can just find stems. Highest I've found is 100 psi.

Glad you were able to get hold of the folks at Cardinal!

I would recommend you get metal valve stems. They will cost you a few $$ more but will eliminate problems with leakage and possibly valve stem issues down the road with the 100 psi you will need for the G rated tires.

Thanks for th metal valve stem reminder. I ordered direct from Goodyear and told them I needed 4 high pressure stems. Surely they'll know what's needed but I've also researched and know what to look for. Thanks again forum.

Cancel the request for manual info. Contacted Cardinal and am getting a generic manual. Model specifics not available. I did get model specific component info CD, fridge AC etc for $25.

Chip users, help!! Love my 2002 F250 7.3L but it does bog down more than I like going up steep grades. I'm looking at the Edge Evolution chip for 7.3s. Any reviews or other chips you've us
