Talking Hitting the road!!

In a about three weeks my wife and I will be hitting the road for the first long trip in our 2008 Cardinal 30le. We have put hundreds of miles on short trips but this is the first one over a couple hundred miles. 1057 miles one way to be exact. We are going to Silver City NM from Iowa LA. to meet friends for a couple weeks. Just to be safe I plan on it taking about 3 days to get there. Stopping in San Antonio TX, Fort Stockton then pull into Silver City Late the third day. I know all people are different but my question is this, what would be the most miles I would want to pull the camper straight? I plan on fuel stops and breaks I figure 400 miles would be a good days pull. Let me know what yal think.

Back when I first started pulling an RV I would look for RV parks in the 350 to 400 mile range to overnight in. As the years have gone by I now find myself looking for parks that are in the 275 to 325 mile range.

That is what I was thinking, after about 7-8 hours pulling the camper is just about all I can handle in a day anyway I told my wife I really aint worried about miles its time that wears on you and 7-8 is more then enough for me I think.

275 is a long day for us. 250 is comfortable. We did 225 in a steady - not a downpour but steady rain all day - on Friday and I was exhausted Friday night.

I have a motorhome and not a camper but I got some good advice from someone early on. It was suggested when doing a long trip to arrive at a campground no later than 4pm. This gives enough time to unwind a little before dinner, enjoy the pool (in the summer) etc., and of course relax the rest of the night. This seems to work great for me.

I usually don't make reservations for overnights. I plan my stay in a particular CG as to where I "think" I'll be around 4pm, but also carry alternatives with me, in case I don't get as far as I thought, or get further than I intended that day, but again....always stop before 4pm. I sometimes call the campgrounds to check availability if it's a weekend or in a popular area.

If I do need to dump the septic, I do it the day I get in, at my leisure, and not the next morning. This makes it much easier to leave refreshed in the am. Realized to dump the night before when I woke up to pouring rains one morning....it wasn't fun.

I don't know what it's like to pull a camper, but I do know that since it's usually just me in the RV, doing everything, that a long drive, especially in heavy traffic, can be exhausting.

I have drove my grandfathers motor coach a couple of times he had a 44' Monaco it was the most comfortable thing I have ever drove but after about 6 hours I was done for I was so tired it was just so big. I find it much easier to pull my 5th wheel. I do however avoid city driving like Houston and Baton Rouge.

If you haven't left yet, I would suggest when you stop in Ft Stockton, to stay the night at the IHOP off I10. It has RV parking and it is quiet and free. We have a 2000w generator we hook up so we can watch TV. Then the next morning you can have pancakes.

The first day a 400 mile run isn't too bad pulling a 5er but it gets old quick by the third day! We almost never book sites on a cross country trip but have multiple options already picked out along our route with the phone numbers. A strong head wind or a tire problem or whatever can delay you and frustrate you if you have to get to a particular place. If we get tired we pull up the nearest option from our list and head that way. Stopping by 4 is a very good idea as it lets you relax!

250 to 300 is enough for me. I did 400 on time I was exhausted. The 4 pm rule is good also.
