Truck Specs Question
Looking at a new 2015 Cardinal 3450RL and want to be sure we purchase the right trucks. We do not want a dually!
Would a new F250 Super Duty 6.7 Diesel or GMC HD 6.6 Duramax handle it?
I have no problem going with a F350 if it would be a big improvement over the F250.
Hitch Weight 2260
Dry Weight 13029
Gross Weight 15940
Thanks!

It's all about the payload capacity of the truck vs the WET hitch/pin weight of the trailer. And don't forget about what you load INTO the truck; like spouse, dog, kids, coolers, generator, etc. That also comes out of payload.

If I remember correctly, based on the Ford RV towing guide the F250 4X4 crew cab, 156" wheelbase the payload is under 2000 lbs with the 6.7l. The F350 is just over 3000 lbs. you may want to check on their web site and verify the numbers, but I believe you will want the F350. I would guess the same holds true with GM.

The GMC 2500 with std box crew cab srw payload is 2590lbs with a 6.6 duramax, the 3500 is 3890 everything else is the same, there is little difference in the price.

My 2011 GMC 2500HD Diesel has a payload of 3,100. I am not sure if the newer models are the same

If you want a better to I'd get a 1 Ton diesel dually of any brand. I think you will be glad you did specially if you towing in the wind.

Only reason I knew this is because I have been exploring this question, I took the numbers from GMC specs sheet, they may have lowered them due to accepting SAE J2807 standards or the ones I was looking at were 4X4.

The newer number probably are different. Mine is a 4x4 but it also has the plow package, which I do not plow, but it increase the payload a little.

One of my main considerations when I bought my truck was can I garage it and the ease of parking when not towing. I did not want to buy a $50k truck and have it sit outside. GMC came out with, after my model year, a 3500 Diesel HD with a short bed. It has the extra payload without the size. That out be my truck choice if I bought today

What is wrong with the highest towing rated vehicle available for 2015 Model Year? The Ram 2500/3500 Cummins equipped truck that meets the SAE J2807 towing standard.
For the 2500 a Crew Cab 4X4 Short box with a 3:42 axle ration and the 68RFE 6-speed auto; the following weights apply. All weights are in Pounds
GVWR 10,000-truck; Payload 2,360; Base weights: Total 7,640; front axle 4,724, rear axle 2,916; GAWR Front 5,750, Rear 6,000, GCWR 25,300, and max trailer weight rating of 17,180.
This is per the Ram Body Builders Guide and the following foot notes apply:
Pay Load and Trailer Weight Rating are Mutually exclusive.
From an engineering standpoint I understand this totally and I have never ever seen where the payload concern has ever been mention by the engineering teams where towing is a concerned. I am a retired heavy vehicle engineer.

This 3450RL is 40 feet long and GVRW of 16,000lbs. I would at least get the F-350 or F450. Although I don't believe the F-450 comes in a single axel, yet.

Single axle? I think it does. Single rear wheel, maybe not. I'm guessing that this is what you meant to say.

We have a 2016 3850RL Cardinal that has weights posted dry at 13950 and I am sure that we had it loaded well for a plus-week trip to the mountains of Tennessee. We have a new 2015 F350 srw diesel that has rear of 3.55 gears that pulled and stop just fine for its first trip out. I have the standard bed so we went with the super-glide hitch 4400 and it to me is well worth the money. Long story but the short of it BUY all the TRUCK you can you will never be sorry for the decision.

5th wheel calculator
Fifth Wheel St. App Promo
I use this one to confirm weights of TV and TT safety margins. There are others for sure, but I like the red/green information this one provides.

I pulled my 3450 RL with an 07 GMC 2500 Duramax Std bed and was right at the rear wheel axle weight rating. I thought it pulled ok until I purchased a DRW. There is no comparison. My dually has to sit outside and it's a small price to pay for safety !

Nobody wants a dually until they try one.
PS The mirrors stick out further than the fenders and that's without extending them for towing.

The OP hasn't replied to any postings for nearly a month. Perhaps he doesn't like the answers? I recommend a 350/3500 DUALLY.
