I bought a cobalt socket from Lowes, 1 1/16 Six point, lifetime warranty, less than $6.00, used my military discount. On the warranty...now wonder where I put the slip at.

You can also buy single sockets at AutoZone. I keep a roll of Teflon tape next to my socket and tape the threads each time I pull it out to drain the heater tank.

Came off like butter this morning! The anode looked pretty good...just some deterioration near the top of the stem. I'll be good to go next spring.
Thanks Again

Lucky you, I had to barrow a breaker bar to get the anode out. I like the idea in this thread to tighten it just enough to stop the water. So next season I'll find out if I could do that without using the breaker bar. Also the Teflon on the tip was there and I'll replace with a new one.
How much is a anode bar replacement for our aframe and where can you get them?

Gary said that using Teflon tape on the threads (like others have suggested) will help make removal easier. He said our nut end was rusty too. The rod will get replaced before the rust becomes an issue, other than the threads getting rusty and, again, the tape helps somewhat. Ours showed some pitting and corrosion at the nut end, so it will be fine for another season at least.

I think I have seen people use a cross-type tire iron for this before as well. Have not tried mine to see if one of the 4 sockets is 1 1/16"

Yeah - I was thinking that also. I bet Herk smiled when he put that in.

We have ridiculously hard water here and after only one season I replaced mine just to be on the safe side because it showed quite a bit of erosion and pocking.

Unscrewed the anode rod out on Thanksgiving. No problem, looked worn so since it was the original, I'll replace it in the Spring.
