Anyone use the small shelf that mounts outside?

I have not used it for two years. On my last trip, I decided to slide it in to see what is like. I found it was a surprisingly nice place to put a water bottle, a hat or other items as I was moving around the campsite. I did not need it for cooking since I normally cook on the picnic table with my Coleman stove.

What's your experience?

My fear is that this thing would dissolve after the first rainstorm. Has anyone painted it with some type of glossy finish to seal it? Any suggestions?

Yes... if also using the gas grill that mounts right next to it. Just takes 2 seconds to hang. Also good if I want to move the TV outside to watch a key college football game...

Looking at some of the 2015 models, it appears that they changed the shelf to a black hard molded plastic type. I agree, if the current one gets wet, it's gonna fall apart.

My shelf is made of formica and is under the awning so not likely to get wet...

We remove ours after use to keep it dry. I have seen where people have replaced the top with a bamboo cutting board and attached the backing bracket. Cutting boards can be coated with olive or cooking oil to seal them. They are a handy addition, and we always use ours when we use the grill. There are places we camp that do not have picnic tables, so the shelf comes in handy for staging food and utensils.

I would like to find the bracket to be able to make a larger shelf.

I've never tried it or looked at it closely because like you we cook with a stove on the picnic table. I may try it on our next trip as a small catch-all like you did.

Mine has stayed stowed since my purchase. I hadn't even though of it much past "oh, there it is," when I look under the bed. I typically set up a minimalist camp with the idea of fast striking so I can get folded and hitched at least as fast as the tenters can get loaded. Since I leave the RV Que at home, uses for the shelf have simply not come to mind. I am camping next in December, I'll pull it out to see.

I just can't go without them both. Replaced both also. yea just wore them out. The table I made out of oak and sealed five coats. Wish I could do the same for the grills.

We use ours *every* trip. It's perfect for setting your drink on when you need to do something hands free, a can of bug spray...a citronella candle, etc.

Our first one delaminated the first year from the dew even tho' it was under the awning. The second one, I disassembled and kept the mounting rail and threw the top itself in the trash. IMO, totally useless.

I put the coffee maker on it when we have people over for a camp fire. Use it for other things too.

We use ours every time we camp. We put the coffee maker on it in the mornings and it holds paper towels and other misc stuff during the day. Ours is made out of the laminate over plywood just like the super heavy table that came with the camper. It seems to have held up well for us.

We use ours for my outside tv. Was not made with that intent. My husband revamped it to make it more sturdy and it works great. Have a weatherproof tv cover so never have to take the tv in until we are ready to go home. Love it!!!!

use mine just about every camping trip either to stage food for grilling to to put the little portable DVD player to watch a movie at night. Never had a problem even with it being left out in the rain a couple of times.

I liked it a lot once I rebuilt the thing. Before the rebuild, we couldn't set anything the least bit heavy on it. Actually wish the new rig had one.....

Took a pc of the mount and bolted it to the back of a coffee maker and just hang the coffee maker on the rail.

The 2015 models come with a larger black plastic outside table that is lightweight and water tolerant. I bought a second identical table from FR since I do not plan on mounting the grill on the trailer. The two together make a very convenient outside shelf for many items.
