Question Baggage Door Catches

I will be changing 5 baggage door locks to a more secure key. I find it inconvenient that you can't leave the doors unlocked in a closed position while at camp. Do I need to add a non-locking twist turn latch also? Is there a magnetic catch suitable for this situation? Thanks, Don.

You could change your locks to one that has a keyed handle rather than just a keyed lock. Do a Google search for a "keyed thumb lock". I saw some that were 7/8" long. It is going to depend on the thickness of your compartment doors. The other question is can you remove the key in the unlocked position? If it can be done that would solve your problem. It looks like you have a "A" frame TT but it might help if you can tell us the make, model and year of it. There may be others that have already solved that problem, put the info in your signature so it will always be there for any future questions.

Yes, I can remove the key in the unlocked position, but the doors just flop open, nothing to hold them in a closed position unless you lock them. Thanks, Don.

Good point--will do

I understand you can remove the keys in your present lock. That is why I suggested a keyed thumb lock, then you can turn it to a locked position. Do a Google search for a keyed thumb lock to take a look at what I am suggesting. Personally I prefer to keep my compartments locked all the time. You may forget it at night and a light fingered Louie could come along a help themselves. Found this on another thread. Check Grainger.com for part # 4LHR3 to see what I mean. Just make sure you order a lock that will be long enough to go through the thickness of the door. I just changed all my compartments to "ACE" locks and needed 1 !/8" long locks or look at "wholesale4inc.com" and search keyed thumb lock. They only have 2 sizes, 5/8" long and 7/8" long. You would have call Grainger to see what lengths they can get after you measure your present locks. Again, check to see if you can remove the key in the unlocked positions, if not you won't gain anything.

Thanks for the additional info. I will follow up on this. I'll be looking for a set of five, all keyed alike.

You shouldn't have any problem getting 5 keyed alike. The only problem you may have would be finding the right length to go through the door.
