Bearing Configuration on an A122s

Not too long after we bought our A-frame, one of my cousins asked if the trailer frame and axle were similar to a boat trailer frame/axle. He was specifically interested in the kind of maintenance that's required for the bearings.

It was a good question because I had never thought of it. And so I went and looked at the Dexter Axle owner's manual that came with the camper. It says that their axles come with a standard bearing configuration, an E-Z Lube method, and a Nev-R-Lube method.

Since we plan on taking ours all over, I thought I'd see if anyone knows for sure which of the above configurations/methods our A-frames came with. Just want to make sure I don't find myself with some seized bearings one day on down the road. Thanks everyone.

All the Aframes come with the E-Z Lube system. This is similar to Bearing Buddies used on boat trailers, there is a grease fitting on the hub which allows you to pump grease into the hub. The problem with this system is the hub get filled with lots of grease, and you don't know for sure if the bearings are getting the grease they need. And if you overfill it the rear seal blows and grease gets all over the brakes. I never used this system its easier to pull the hub, clean the bearings of old grease and repack and install a new rear seal, Dexter says to do this once a year, takes about an hour, Dexter has a great how to step by step video on Youtube. I replaced my bearings and cups with Timken made in the USA for about $10 a side from Amazon, I did this after my first season when it was time to grease.

I believe Bearing Buddies are made to put the grease in through the outer bearing to the inner bearing and out the seals to force water out. Which is totally different than the E-Z Lube system.

The procedure is as follows:
  1. Remove the rubber plug from the end of the grease cap.
  2. Place a standard grease gun onto the grease zerk located
in the end of the spindle. Make sure the grease gun nozzle
is fully engaged on the fitting.
  3. Pump grease into the zerk. The old, displaced grease will
begin to flow back out the cap around the grease gun
    nozzle.
  4. When the new, clean grease is observed, remove the
grease gun, wipe off any excess, and replace the rubber
    plug in the cap.
  5. Rotate hub or drum while adding grease.

BIG thing with the E-Z Lube is that you should NEVER use an air powered grease gun this will blow out the back grease seal and fill your brake drum with grease, ONLY use a hand pump grease gun.
