Blowout on the Interstate

So I'm driving along on I 69 in Sugarland Tx. Some guy pulls on beside me honking wildly. Not one to ignore a warning I look back and see the camper leaning.

So flashers and brakes go on as I move to the shoulder. Then I hear the pop as the tire blows. Nothing to do but listen to steel on concrete as I limp to safety.

Pulled into a parking lot. The tire is destroyed with the intact tread wrapped around the brake. Put on the spare and went on my way and made it to camp safely.

I think this was an original tire as the other one developed a bubble on the way to the same park about a year ago. 🙄

All is good at camp. Just put on a long sleeve shirt because it's finally cool here.

Wow! Glad it worked out! This makes me reconsider purchasing radials in favor of bias tires. It's incredible that there appear to be no damage to your trailer! I am planning on new tires next season. What did (or will) you replace with?

Could have been much worse. Very glad to hear that it was not. I replaced the tires on my 2012 earlier this year, just for insurance. Since I bought mine used, I had no real idea how old those tires were, but it was for exactly this reason that I didn't want to take any chances.

There is a manufacture date code on every tire made.

Glad every thing worked out for you.

Had a bubble about the size of a baseball come on one of my tires. I got it changed before it blew out. I have ST 175/80R13 load range D rated at 1610 lbs. Will be getting new tires before next season starts. Found some Bias ply at E-trailer ST 185/80 D13 rated at 1725 lbs. They are .3 inches larger in diameter and .2 inches wider thane the ST175/80R13 that are on the camper now.

The wheel wells are pretty tight with these tires now as far as diameter. Will make a decision on weather to go with the larger size or not before next season. I will take any feedback if anyone has any.

Glad to hear it wasn't worse than it could have been, and most importantly it didn't stop your camping trip.

On a humorous note, would you like for me to edit your original post. It appears you may have left the "r" out of the word "shirt" and thus our cuss filters kicked in with the asterisks.

Carlisle is now making load range D radial ST tires in 13 in sizes. The answer for someone who wants better tires than the stock Chinese no name.

Tire replacement

We just purchased a new Outback with the Chinese tires. I replaced them with maxis tires 10 ply and just completed a 10,000 mile trip with no problems. These tires are rated to 80MPH for you all with the heavy foot. I was passed so many times on the trip with folks that must be hitting 70 and above

First, let me say I am VERY happy that it worked out all right and that nobody was hurt, or your camper damaged.

The REAL lesson here is that if you had changed both tires last year, when the first one blew, you would not have had this problem a year later.

In my experience when one tire in a set goes, the others are not far behind. It IS NOT worth a few extra miles out of a tire to risk your camper, your life and/or the property or lives of the others on the road!

This sounds much more like a low pressure failure than a old tire failure. And also like the classic reason why TPMS is a very good idea.

Run at a low enough pressure to exhibit lean, ANY tire will fail. Excessive flexing in the side wall as the tire bulges at the bottom and flattens out will break down the sides of the tire just like shown in your pictures.

Glad nothing was damaged and nobody was hurt.

I once borrowed a small utility trailer to tow behind my Mustang taking some scouts to summer camp. Pulling onto the freeway after lunch I heard a bang but did not think too much of it. Some miles later somebody passes me waving and yelling about a tire etc so I pull over. I get out and walk back thinking "what the heck this tire looks fine". Then I get to the passenger side and go "OH!". No tire left. No rim left. Nothing but a center disk of wheel. And I had not noticed anything abnormal in towing or handling. Just motoring on down the road I was.

This amazed me in my blowout. I didn't feel a thing at the time. It took a waving passing motorist to alert me.

In retrospect I did think it was making the engine work harder. I thought it was because I was going uphill though.

I noticed in the OP's pictures a heavy duty multi tire iron. I encourage everyone to make sure they can take their wheels off to be able to put their spare on. Do this at home. Don't wait to be on the side of the road and realize you do not have the right tool.

Your assessment is incorrect. I'd checked and inflated the tire 30 minutes before it blew.

I believe it was a tread separation that caused the passerby to call it to my attention and to cause the initial lean. If not the tread then is was some other visually noticeable failure that occurred before the blow out, because I heard the blowout and saw the side of the camper drop further.

I was wondering what caused that. I wrote the post on the app, where my typing and proofreading is even worse than on a full computer. Please correct.

Will do. The word "shut" is the main culprit to get misspelled since the u an i are right beside each other on a keyboard. [emoji2]
