Campfire cake recipes?

Taking DH camping for his 50th birthday. I want to make him a cake, but not the traditional oven-baked. I've googled, but always do better with "word of mouth" recommendations. Does anyone have any good chocolate cake recipes to make over a campfire?

Thanks so much!!
Debbie

Campfire cake recipes?

+1 on the Dutch oven. An 8 or 10 inch Dutch oven, with a parchment paper liner that you can get to use in them, and a standard box cake or scratch cake recipe, will give you a cake to remember. There'll be a learning curve on the front end of the experience but on the back end you'll have a new cooking utensil and a truly outdoorsy cooking method. Oh, and the Dutch oven can be part of his birthday present!
Here's a temperature chart to get you started. Each size oven has two lines. The first tells how many chunks of charcoal to start, and the second tells how many of that number to put under the oven and how many on the lid.

I have been making dump cakes in a cast iron Dutch Oven for years. Put Filling in the bottom then add your box cake (just dump it in there). Slice real butter in patties and place randomly over the top of the cake mix. I use two cans of pie filling, two boxes of cake mix, and two sticks of butter (sliced). Slide some coals (you can use charcoal) out of the fire and place the Dutch oven one the coals, then cover the lid with some more coals/charcoal. Wait 30-40 minutes. It's a dump cake so you have to spoon it out. It makes a very yummy cherry or apple dump cake to0o Yum, yum....
