Twisty, turny, narrow and rough, unless it has been upgraded recently. I would stick to the TCH if possible and take the smaller highways for sightseeing. That route 1, in particular, was the roughest I've been on. It may have been improved over the years but there is not much there, only wilderness. It will take you through Plaster Rock, the hometown of the worlds biggest outdoor hockey tournament each year.
UPDATE: Just spoke to a friend from that area and he says, there is no improvement, will not afford you a short cut and there are lots of logging trucks. Now, you have to make a deecision.
UPDATE # 2: Take TCH to Moncton and then drive north on 11.
