Camping During Christmas

Several times my wife and I have driven through state parks during Christmas week and have seen travel trailers and motor homes all decked out in Christmas lights. Never seen an Aframe during the holidays.

I was wondering if any of you have ever camped out during Christmas. I know Christmas is usually with family but I thought how neat to be camped during this time of the year....site all decorated...open presents on Christmas morning...campfire on Christmas morning.

If you have did you decorate your camper and site?

When my kids were small we spent Christmas in our camper at an RV park in Port Aransas Texas. We had a little tree we put on the table and opened presents. Being from Minnesota it was strange not having any snow but Christmas lights were up all over the area so it still felt like Christmas time. It was an enjoyable and rather quiet way to spend Christmas.

I used to camp on the edge of a lake with no hook ups throughout the winter months. It was cold, icy and sometimes snow. I think there were literally thousands of birds on the lake that would carry on all night along with coyotes howling. When I camped there I never saw another camper during the winter months. It was a very strange feeling to step out of the camper at night, it was as though you were the only person left on the planet. I truly enjoyed it, but I don't think it's for everyone.

We did it the first year that we owned the camper and are planning on it again (this warm waterfront site with a tiki hut and our own boat dock just above Key West!).

Here are my notes from our trip in 2012:

Yes we have but not far from home. We usually leave the day after Christmas and stay a few days. It just depends on the weather. I live in south Texas so it's not uncommon for the temp to be in the 80's on Christmas Day. That makes for great beach weather which is where we usually go. We string lights and decorate a small tree. Most of the residents of the park are winter Texans who are escaping the cold up north and they decorate their rigs as well, nice to see all the lights.
