Camping in Kentucky
Greeting fellow Kentuckians:
I wish to visit eastern Kentucky and am looking for a state or national park with water and 30 amp service, preferably wooded sites. Any fellow campers have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim DiFazio

My wife and I have gone to the state park at Cumberland Falls a couple of times. Not necessarily eastern Kentucky but a really nice wooded small campground.

Spent a couple nights at Carter Caves SP in Olive Hill last fall. Nice SP and sounds like it would fit your bill.

You may want to check out Littcar Campground. It is a Corps of Engineers campground on Carr Fork lake. There are several sites with full hookups and several with water and electric. Location is between Hazard and Whitesburg. Sites are not wooded but most have shade. A nice campground.

Living in KY, we have stayed in a lot of them so far. Twin Knobs on Cave Run Lake is nice. With the exception of one or two, just about any SP in Kentucky is nice for RVs. My favorite is Cumberland Falls though. Not real crazy about Kincaid Lake.

As already stated, all of the state parks here are really nice - that is to say that I've not yet been to one here that I didn't like. Many are older, so smaller campers do better than larger, but overall you should be in good shape at a state park in Kentucky.
What types of activities are you interested in while you are there? Hiking is common in most of the parks here, as is fishing at any park near water, but there are a lot of history related parks as well.

Kentucky Horse Park is one of our favorite place to camp. Great lots and friendly people. The Horse Farm has tours you can do and is close to lots of shopping and restaurants.

What CG in Tennessee would be recommended with activities for 5yr and under?

You can hit the link here in my signature for the MoosePod Adventures map. We list all the campgrounds in Kentucky that we visit regularly, our favorite sites at them, etc.
If that helps any. I know from others in our group that the Twin Knobs and ones around there are very nice.

Littcar sounds like a good choice for me. I have an A Frame and I require water, 30 amp service and be close to the men's room/shower house. (I'm handicapped and can't walk very far.) My main interest is in nature photography, a nice shady spot and peace and quiet. One not too difficult to get into.
Do you have any suggestions on campsite numbers I can use to make a reservation?
Thanks for your input. I sincerely appreciate it.

I would suggest going to ReserveAmerica website and enter Littcar Campground. You could also call and ask about sites that meet your needs. It has been a couple of years since we were there but as I remember sites 16 20 21 22 may be what you are looking for. 1-14 are full hookups, B numbered sites are on a hill and are smaller.

I'm probably not the best person to ask about that type of thing (no kids), but the best park I've camped in so far in Tenn., hands down, was Fall Creek Falls. Amazing - no other words for it...

I've never camped at Fall Creek Falls, but visited probably a hundred times over the years (family lives nearby). It is an amazing park full of great trails and beautiful water falls. The lodge is very nice (but aging a bit) and I do hear the CG is great.
They have a nice golf course, kids activities, hiking, fishing at the lake (and fishing cabins if you are into that).
Can't say enough good things about fall creek falls.

I haven't camped in TN since I was a kid myself, so I can't recommend any particular campground, but as a parent who camps with kids under 5 I have taken a liking to the KOAs. I know a lot of people have issues with them, but I haven't found any other chain that offers more for the kids to do.
Though for my own sanity (and pocketbook) I try to get the family about 50% KOA style and 50% real camping in a State Park.

I haven't camped at Falls Creek Falls, I have friends that have stayed there and they love it I plan to go this year.

I have never camped at KOA's. I will check into some though.

Jeep4Two:
I tried making a reservation at Litt Carr and in addition to the use fee, they tell me I need a to buy a yearly pass for $80.00. Does Falls Creek Falls have the same policy?
Thanks,
Jim

Nolan Lake State Park is really very nice, kind off the beaten path somewhat, but well worth the drive. Close by to the caves, small paddle wheel ferry takes you across the river. Gas up before you head out when leaving the expressway, only two gas stations, one is really kool with lots of country stuff:

Check again. I've never heard of a park that made you buy a yearly pass.
All we've been to also had a day fee. If you stayed more than a week it
sometimes became cheaper to buy the pass.
We stayed at Fall Creek Falls in 2012 and they didn't require a year pass.
Fall Creek Falls was actually one of the cheaper stops on our trek that year.
Also one more note about Fall Creek Falls TN. They have a great swimming pool in season. It's got a deep end and a 3 meter diving board.
You hardly ever see diving boards at public pools anymore. We loved it!
Happy Camping!
