even the smallest FR A-frame weighs way over that, before you add anything.
the lowest "dry" weight is 1888lbs.

i know of very few popups that are under 1500lbs.

This thread makes me think of some campers out there, towing their TTs with a minivan, rav-4, crv, or some other tiny insufficient vehicle. We've all seen them. Just because you can tow something with a crv doesn't mean you should. In a year, the guy is taking his busted transmission to his mechanic going "I don't know why my tranny exploded." Not made for the task...

May want to look at the Aliner brand instead of Forest River. Aliner has the lightest available A-Frames on the market. I think the Alite model is there lighteat model. Tiny yet cute, it is a cute trailer. Also look at some of the small folding trailers like motorcycles pull....a CRV isnt mich of a towing beast, but your not without a few towable choices.

Don't Recommend it. We HAD an 05 CRV thought the 1500 cap. would pull a golf car on a small trailer which was well less than 1500 lbs cap. We pulled it to Myrtle beach 3 trips from VA. I pulled the camper the DW pulled the Golf car. The DW said the CRV felt like it strained all the time. Gas consumption also doubled. ( I should had listened to her as she had never pulled a trailer before not on the highways anyway) It handled it fine but the transmission did not, so at 165K it went out & again (no longer towing at 178K) By the way found out CRV trans do not rebuild well......

We got an 2011 Subaru Outback (100K now) it did fine towing but we decided a TH was a better answer for us for the golf car.

Good Luck

Search towing witha Honda CRV. I think that vehicle, like mine, has a totally different tow rating in Europe. I remember reading about a guy in Canada towing an egg camper with one. I am not saying you should exceed anything, but educate yourself first. Also search US vs Europe tow ratings. Some good reading.

I think all I'd tow with a CRV is a small flatbed with lawn mowers or something. The CRVs I've driven are pretty wimpy. They're made for cities, commuting and nothing heavy duty. They do those previous things very well!

Ford Idaho has a good idea - ultralight teardrops. Now THAT might work. I have a friend with a teardrop, and he occasionally pulls it with his Prius. But usually uses his 4cy Subaru Outback. The CRV might still be straining up a hill, though.

My understanding from anecdotes is that Honda makes great motors but pairs them with less capable transmissions. So your friends shouldn't push their luck if they want the car to last. The Aliner Scout, for instance has a 1174 lbs factory shipped weight (with no fridge or A/C) and a 2100 lbs gross weight rating. It would be practically very difficult to tow a Scout in a camping configuration and stay within the ratings of the vehicle. It is one thing to push a truck a few hundred pounds over a 7000 lbs rating but quite another to do the same on a small crossover with a 1500 lbs rating. Beyond the rating, you pays your money and takes your chances.

If they want to increase camping comfort, an alternative is to buy a cargo trailer and set it up for camping with storage bins and a nice sized tent.

Just my $.02: pay as much or more attention to STOPPING capacity as to towing capacity.

+1 on that.

And sway control inherent in the vehicle when running close to the limits.

The Aliner Scout comes with 10 inch brakes. The CRV could probably stop faster towing the Scout than without.

True. I've heard a lot of teardrop style trailers don't have brakes.

Cathy,

Not a A-Frame, but how about a Little Guy? Gotta be something there for a CRV - they make them small enough to be pulled by a full dresser motorcycle

And, BTW, it's NOT that your friend can't tow a A-Frame...
it's that they can't STOP the A-frame safely

The lightest Aliner is the Alite...the newer models weigh 610, but there have seen older Alites advertised models in the 400 lb range. It can be towed by a motorcycle....
http://www.tennesseerv.com/tennessee...p-Campers.aspx If your friend is set on an A Frame, this is the only one her car could prob handle well enough to tow with.
