kitchen faucet mod

Not long ago there was a thread about changing out the bathroom type faucet for one that was taller and easier to use. I was inspired to search for one that I saw in a foto which folded from more than 5 inches down to about 2 inches tall. I finally found it and my favorite technical director just installed it.

It is a huge improvement for kitchen staff.

I can't figure out how to upload pictures but will happily e-mail them along with purchase info and installation info if anyone wants to consider this mod.

This is a great idea! Can't wait to see the product details. If anyone in the group has figured out how to mount a sprayer nozzle on the faucet (maybe using a detachable extension hose) I'd love to know how that was done, as well. Thanks, everyone.

Here's the requested link for the folding faucet.

Whale Faucet Compact Mixer Short - Star Marine Depot

-if that doesn't work, it was ordered from
Boat Supplies and Marine Electronics at Star Marine Depot

Product ID: ZZ19532 MFG ID: TB4112

My technical guy had to invent a way to reframe the holes in the sink which don't match up. He took a piece of sturdy plastic, drilled the appropriate holes, drilled the matching holes in the sink, glued the plastic piece to the sink then mounted the faucet.

I can't describe better than that. (Just a gripe here, this forum is very difficult to use. )

If you want pictures of the installation, email me and I'll send.

Good luck

I bought that same faucet a few years ago. I returned it after seeing I made the measurement error that the holes didn't measure up. I wasnt willing to put effort to modding it to fit when there were other faucet options. (I returned it in favor of a swivel utility sink faucet with excellent extension and a quarter of the price)

I wish you could post your photos. Would enjoy seeing how it looks in your little kitchen.

Note: you can post photos by going to the "advanced" and then touch the paper clip to attach photos. Select your photo & Hit upload. Close window and preview your post. I usually post off my smart phone. Hope this helps?

Hi Ms. Handbuilder -- Can you refresh our memories about the make/model of the faucet replacement you installed? (Think you posted it previously, but I couldn't locate the thread.). Thanks for all terrific info, everyone!

This is the faucet I replaced the original one with. It came from Lowes for about 20- . It's called a laundry/utility sink faucet. Love the extension and ability to swivel that it offers for cleaning things in the sink.

the plastic used to accommodate the mis-matched holes shows up as a white base for faucet handles.

Also note the sink was rotated to better accommodate a right handed user.

The pics are rotated from vertical.

Hope this helps.

Handbuilder,

I purchased this same faucet but will have to take it back because a-wall screen and window hits faucet when folding down. This faucet is a little over an inch taller than the old one. What is the height of your faucet from sink to highest point of faucet? How much clearance do you have when folded down? Does it hit screen at all when folded? Thanks ahead of time!

[Mzak, I remove it for travel. It's fast and easy to do. I carry an extra O-ring (just in case it's ever needed). I have traveled twice without removing it because I forgot. The window was fine (thank goodness!) but definitely not anything I'd want to again. (You can see the height of the faucet to the wall hinge in the second photo)

For the short seconds it takes to remove for travel, the benefit of the longer extension and swivel are worth it to me. Oh - I also stuff a twirled up paper towel into the hole to absorb water after I open the low drain before travel. (See first photo)

Do you know size of o ring and where you purchased it at? I went to hardware store and purchased two sizes close to it but neither worked. According to my measurements and the standard size charts it appears to be a #15 (11/16" o.d. 1/16" thick) but the #15 in store was too big (1" diameter. 1/8" thick) so I went by looks and purchased a#11 and #80 but one was too thick and the other slightly larger o.d.and would slip off.
Thanks for info on taking apart while travelling. It looked like it might come apart but I wasn't sure.

Hi Mzak!
Here are the O-rings I purchased as well as the silicone grease for them. I keep them in a small container under the sink with other small kitchen needs. Hope this helps! I got these the same time I purchased the faucet, the plumbing guy opened the O-ring box to show me how to replace if I needed to.

Thanks for photo! That is actually the size of one of the O rings I purchased and seemed too tight but did not use silicon grease. I'll have to try that.
Have you actually had to replace original o rings yet? If so did the new O rings work OK?
