Most converters don't get up to 14.2V, which is the voltage you need to properly charge some (most?) true deep cycle batteries.

I recommend staying away from the cheaper LEDs. I have a whole bag full of 'em. At least they didn't cost a lot!

I think my charging unit does get up to 14.2 volts.
I know that my solar charger get up to 14.2
I know when the trailer is connected to my truck. I am running 14 volts or more.
If you run 12 volt LEDs on 14 volts they are going to have a short bright life.
I have use the above and you can run these at 10 volts or 30 volts and the light output is the same, the reason is there is a voltage regulator on the board that set the voltage to the LED that is why these are not dimable.
I do not know if you are calling these cheap or not, but I have bought 14 of these and have not had a failure in the 4 years ( 4 have only been used for 1 year) that I have use them.
