I usually leave the front light turned on when I close up. The cut off switch does its job of disconnecting the light and I can see that it has done so while the roof ic closing. Since I have LED bulbs the fixture doesn't get hot enough to worry about a failure of the cut off switch.

There has never been a problem for me. Your issue might just have been a coincidence as I do not see how leaving the light on could cause the problem.
