mattress and cushion storage

It's sad but true, the camping season is coming to a close. Last year we stored the mattress and cushions in the house, while the camper was in (non heated) storage. What do you do with these items, leave in stored camper or not?

Here in Texas we don't actually have a "down time" for camping since we can camp pretty much all year but unless you are afraid of animals getting into your camper and eating through your fabric I would leave the cushions inside the camper. They are out of the weather and dry.

I am with mlsa3, camping season is just getting underway. How difficult is it to get the mattress out of the camper?

We just leave them in the camper but we often stop in at the RV storage lot during the winter to check-up on it..air it out, check the lines, ensure no critters are making a happy home, and my wife likes to keep it all dusted and clean. (And we count the days until Spring!)

Good idea, but our storage is in a building, not accessible during the winter. I just don't want to open up the camper in the spring to a smelly/moldy mattress!

if you are concerned about mold/mildew - a bucket or two of DampRid crystals work well to keep the air inside the camper dry through the winter season and you can just throw out the buckets and their accumulated water in the spring time.

we bring in the linens but leave the bed mattress and cushions in place. we place a few absorbent pads soaked with peppermint oil to keep things fresh, we put these mostly in the cabinets and under sink... they may have deterrent effect for rodents top, I can't comment in their effectiveness for that, we prefer to just seal up all possible rodent entry points and have never ever had a problem. of course, we don't store any foods in the camper overwinter either.

We live in NY and over the winter we installed vent covers on all the vents and leave them open all winter for air circulation and we do not cover the trailer either. Never had a problem. Now we just go to Florida for the winter.

In 30 years of camping I have never had a problem with mice and cushions, they by far prefer the insulation, wiring and toilet paper to destroy.

I'm with misa3, we also reside in Texas about 300 miles to the north of misa3 in Cleburne. We use the camper year round for the most part so all that is removed are foods that are not sealed including pet foods and fridg items. We stay allot in Kemah, about 20 miles to the S.E of Pasadena, my sis lives in Pasadena.

Hi everyone have had a rockwood 128s for 3years the camping season doesn't stop in Canada for us so storing mattress and stuff is not to much of a problem

Welcome to the forum, Dsfast!

Year round camping and Canada are not words we on the Gulf Coast normally associate with each other. I guess between heat or cold it is a pick your poison situation.

For your peace of mind it might be better to store them in the house again this year. The others have provided good feedback in case you do decide to keep them in the camper.

I'm in Texas and we use indoor storage. We have a Popup currently and just bought a Aframe. With Popups having mattresses and with storage we never had a single problem. The pup stayed dry and when we opened it there was never any odor just the new camper smell. We also used a memory foam topper that kept in a space bag. So my theory is that leaving mattress/cushions in the camper would not be a problem. I'm still planning on doing the same once we get our aFrame home.

Over the last 36 years we have owned a few campers and trailers. We have never taken the mattress and/or bedding out for the winter. I can't ever remember having a musty smell. My wife throws some Bounce sheets around tho'.
