I have a 2010 Ranger, 4.0 with a manual trans. I average 20 mpg in my day to day and when I tow my 212hw I get 15-16 in Utah (mountain passes and such). The key is I never go above 75% throttle, even on a steep grade. It doesnt help much and is borderline abusing my truck. Slow and steady works for me. Campers bigger than my truck anyways...
I limit my speed at 65 mph, and I don't use overdrive as the weak point in my tow rig is the transmission, and 4th gear, aka direct drive, is the strongest gear to tow in.
