Payment Method?

I'm hoping to sell my A-frame soon (I have it posted in RV Trader) and need advice on which payment method to accept. When I bought the camper, I used a certified check from my credit union. The person who's interested mentioned using his PayPal account, but I'm not sure using PayPal is a good idea.

Anyone have some advice? Thanks in advance.

cash or a certified bank check, I do not recommend using paypal or a personal check for a purchase like this.

I personally would stay away from that sounds fishing, nothing like cash in hand. Even certified checks are kind of fishy now days from what I hear.

True, I do know a few folks that got burned with a "certified bank check" when it came back to be fake. Cash is best, if that's real

You might also incur fees to use PayPal.

I would stay away from paypal (fees, refunds,a hold/wait times) and if you accept a check your bank will put a hold on it, with a check I would not release the RV or title until the hold is over and the funds are cleared, this can sometimes can take up to 10 days.

If the guy has money in his PayPal it takes one day to have it deposited into his checking, then he can give you cash.

Personally I like to use PayPal whenever I can.

So far it's safe and reliable.

I like PP because I can use my credit card to pay for things without actually giving my CC number out. I don't even think I have a checking account hooked into PP.

I have bought several items from members of this forum using my PayPal account to transfer money to their PayPal accounts... plus I've bought much of the mods/equipment for my trailer using PayPal. Now and then you'll find that the people who recommend against using PayPal have never had any dealings with it.

Don't get me wrong Pay Pals is not bad but not fail safe, you will incur fees because you're the seller.
And after your trailer leaves with the customer he could go home and put a hold on the transaction from Pay Pals for any one particular reason.

I have had sellers "verify" me with PayPal before completing the transaction. The more a person uses it for purchases, the safer it is for the sellers.

The safest way to handle a sale like this is to finalize the transaction at the buyer's bank. You can witness him getting a bank check payable to you, sign the paperwork on the spot and have anything notarized there. Once the title is taken care of inside, go back to the parking lot and help him hitch up.

If you are flexible about the time and bank location, this will be acceptable to most buyers and will keep all the scammers away.

That said, I sold my last camper for a check because, it was drawn on the same bank I use and the guy wanted me to store the camper for two weeks while his TV was getting set up.

PayPal will definitely put a 10 day hold on large transactions. And after that you may be out the money and your camper. Sounds shady to me. Best options are cash, meet at his bank, or if a bank check or certifed check, you both go to your bank and have them call to verify the funds and check. Only then do you hand the title over.

This is what I did. I met the buyer at their bank at a mutually agreed upon time. The bank can then either direct deposit the money into your account or issue a cashier's check while you are present. You can also get all paperwork notarized while at the bank. I had the buyer sign an as is where is type contract that protected both parties. Turns out we had both drawn one up. His was worded better, we agreed on using that version. We had both the title and contract notarized.
