Pictures from SW Colorado camping trip

Hello All!

We took our A122BH camper up to a campground that we like just east of Durango, Colorado near the Vallecito Reservoir for the Memorial day weekend. We also drove up to Silverton and had a great soak in the local hot springs. We had excellent weather and a wonderful time. Our A122BH worked extremely well and we were very comfortable in spite of the chilly 40 degree temps at night. Here are some pictures:

The place in the pictures is a four hour drive from my house in Albuquerque. We can go for just one night if we wish.

Yes. This campground is an old school concept campground that caters primarily to tent and small pop up style campers. There are some bigger rigs that frequent this place but there are no toilet dumps and only a few camp sites that offer electricity...and it is only 120. There are latrine style bathrooms and potable water available but no hoses, you have to tote your water back to your camp site by hand. Primitive by some standards, but that's the way we like it. The good part is that the camp sites are large, well maintained and far apart. I HATE camping ten feet from the next guy...I like my space. The camp sites each have a good sturdy fire ring with a grate for cooking and a picnic style table. The camp site is heavily wooded with a beautiful creek running right through it. The sound of the water rushing over the rocks lulls you to sleep at night. If you really need electricity you can bring a generator but it has to be a really quiet one, we have a Honda 2000i that does everything we need and is whisper quiet. The reason we chose a small A Frame camper is because the campgrounds we like to visit are mostly like this one, not much room to maneuver a bigger rig. We like a clean campground with a lot of space, peace and quiet and this campground offers just that.

We'll be going back after the 4th of July rush is over.

Thanks for the pics.we just bought a 2014 A122BH and love the bike hauled on front. Did you use it for bikes? We took ours out 2 weeks ago on the beach in Tampa Bay, close to home, water was warm, beach nice, paddle boarded and biked and relaxed. Going back to the same spot next weekend.

BTW. We also use the shade like you had in your pic. We added a net for bug protection. Still looking for fake grass or the perfect ground cover, any thoughts on that?

The photo of the bear proof dumpster really shows the power those animals possess. I love your outdoor kitchen area, we had something similar back in our tent camping days.

Great looking camping spot! We have used the front rack for our bikes before but not on this trip. Mostly I use it for tables, kitchen sink, chairs, etc. Of course everything must be strapped in securely. We bought our grass mats at Home Depot, I think they were around $15.00 each. Not too many bugs up where we were...maybe a few flies and such but no mosquitoes. We bought the EZ-Up shade cover at Sam's Club. It came with fully enclosable walls but we seldom use them. I'd like to get some screen walls for it in case we ever encounter an area with bugs.

Yes, the bears are nothing to play around with, they are extremely strong as the photo suggests. That steel dumpster lid was quite thick...I can't believe that even a bear could bend it like that. Amazing.

I used a Astroturf style carpet a few items until it got rain and mud soaked at one trip. Packing it up that was was unpleasant because it retained water and the dirt did not shake out when dry. We went for a open weave polypropylene mat after that and the water passed right through. There are undoubtedly differences in the turf style carpets, so be aware.

Camping in Colorado

We're heading back up to this place the week after the fourth of July. The weekenders will have mostly gone home by then and the camp will be peaceful and serene. Ahhhhhh....just the way I like it!

The Vallecito area has a lot of campgrounds, but I like to keep that on the down low. It's one of the few places in my area that is beautiful and not too crowded, I'd like to keep it that way.
