Replacing 13-inch wheels with 14s

We've got a Rockwood A122, and I'm curious if anyone has replaced their stock 175/80R13 tires with 205/75R14s. There's far better rubber available in the 14-inch size, and an extra inch of ground clearance would be nice. On the other hand, I really don't want to install a new axle to pull it off.

If you have a Dexter Torflex axle, they make an inexpensive lift kit. I think it is about a 3-1/2" lift which should easily allow 14" tires. Of course this would affect hitch height.

Carlisle is now making 13" Load Range D ST radial tires for a reasonable price.

My A122 A-frame doesn't have a lot of room in the wheel well for a bigger tire. On a straight A122, if you are staying within GVWR limits, there is about a 10% margin on the carrying capacity of the tires. My stock Westlake 185R/13 Load Range D tires have 2 x 1,710 lbs carrying capacity. GVWR is just under 3,100lbs, and I normally tow at 2,800lbs or less. When the Westlakes age out, I'll replace them with Carlisles.

just my thoughts
