They are an aid, as you say, to keep the roof halves together when lifting or closing. Without them, the back half would fall when closing or one could easily open the back half to high on setup such that the front roof piece would fall down.

Have you experienced a problem with the bungees?
No problem but I' the kind of guy who wants to know ahead of time how to fix. Seems ( If one snapped ) one would have to drill out a rivet. Ever done it?
I haven't had any problems either. Like you, I've looked at the roof and wondered, because the bungies seem to be a maintenance item that isn't expected to last the expected life of the camper. My thinking only got to, "maybe tying a knot would work," if an emergency repair was needed.
