Screen door

Has anyone figured out a good way to add a screen door to their Aframe that is not just a hanging curtain like Magic Mesh? I think the Magic Mesh has had mixed reviews (doesn't always close properly, wind blows open).

It seems like FR could have made a top half and bottom half framed screen door and incorporated it onto the hard wall door frame so that you could still fold the walls down and have the function of a split screen door.

My A122 has a screen window in the upper half of the door. Between that, the 2 opening vents in the side windows, and the roof vent we seem to have all the ventilation we need or want in Colorado.

I have to yet to see any fold-down camper of any kind that had the lower door section with a screen. I just wouldn't want to have that weak a door lower section, especially since the latch and lock install on the lower section - and the lower section is exposed to the elements. It would also be something else that would have to be remembered to be closed before lowering the roof (I have already forgotten the vent a couple of times, and had to raise the roof again to shut it).

I have seen larger screen sections in the upper door section than my A-frame has on various pop-ups. That would probably be a doable mod using the existing upper door frame.

my thoughts, your choices

Love to see a hard framed screen door on an A-Frame! I've had a few thoughts for how I'd create one but not a priority since i have kept busy with other interior changes.

Regarding the Magic Mesh - Its so nice to go in and out and not have to pull a door closed behind me. I like being able to push a hand inside to set my keys or cup on the counter without ever entering the trailer. Our Magic Mesh door had been up since 2012...its never blown open and it closes just fine. Look forward to seeing what you develop!

Magic mesh door.

Just a question for those of you who use the magic mesh door on their A Frame. Have you had any animals other than your pets get into the trailer? I wonder about chipmunks as one place I camp at has some very friendly, bold little chips. Of course no camping trip would be complete without raccoons stopping by but Id prefer they stay outside.

So far nothing ever wandered inside...have only seen a chipmunk once, a few squirrels, lots of birds, big game and with the exception of a baby Robin who attached itself to one of my dogs, none has every come near us or in the trailer.

Too cute Handbuilder. How did the dog feel about his love connection?

Haha the bird disturbed his sleep...it kept making eyes at him, and trying to snuggle against the crate. My dog was trying to get me to take care of his newly found winged friend. I think it stayed by him for a good 90 minutes. It reminded me of the children's book "Are You My Mother"

JL, I like your concept of building a screen for the upper half of the door and using two of the existing door hinges for the screen. My question is how did you get the screen to fit in the existing door frame and still allow the hard door to close fully? It seems that my hard door width takes up all the space and closes directly up against the door frame.

We're extremely happy with our Magic Mesh screen door, and haven't had any unwanted visitors. Excluding folks wanting tours, of course.
