Vent fan in rain?

I have read a few post mentioning fan upgrades and vent covers. I would like to install one but not sure if I should replace fan or just a cover? I want to be able to have the vent open while its raining.

Anyone done added a fan or vent cover to their high wall aframe and used it in the rain?

Yes I use the fantastic fan cover, With it I've had my fan open and on, during torrential down pours. I love it. The cover attaches by little cotter type pins. With it installed the correct way, it would catch wind going down the road, so it goes on the opposite way of the pic, while being towed. It's easy to turn it around, just be sure to turn it around before popping it up, unless you're ten feet tall.

Love it!!

I did the same as Jay. Works perfectly. Less than two minutes to turn it around for road travel. I leave the vent open, a little, for storage. Love it.

The stock flat cover works very well on our A-frame's steeply sloped roof. I always crack the vent open at least an inch or two when the A-frame is set up. It just doesn't let water in when it rains because it faces downward. I've been in torrential thunderstorms in both the Black Hills and western Texas with the vent cracked, and never had any water come in.

If it's not raining, then I can open the vent as wide as desired. I do keep it open at least a little at all times because both the Cool Cat and heater circulate air better when the vent is cracked.

I forgot to mention that I installed the reverse flow kit in my fantastic fan, so the cover allows me to suck in air, and pressurize the cabin so to speak. With the fan blowing in, I can open my other windows some and the rain doesn't come in due to the air going out. Couldn't have done this without the cover.

A picture of the cover and pins (not on an A-frame, but same idea):

I open mine all the way, two inches I'm sure would be fine, as far as water getting in maybe. I prefer to have the option to open mine all the way, and as I mentioned earlier I turn my fan to where it sucks in air, you definitely can not do that with no vent cover

But your circulation is restricted to about a 2 inch output....because your only exiting with a 5 inch hight in a gridwork only on the front of the scoop..now if that front grid was removed...then i could see a benefit.
Just my opinion tho..

Nice mod! So far not necessary for my circumstances. Like D-Mo, I've had my vent open in the rain with no issue of water getting in, still pulls the air in or out depending on what direction I have it switched to.

Those covers are very nice mods.

Like Handbuilder the stock situation works for me. My hiking group activities sometimes require very fast teardowns at camp in the morning. Sometimes leaving at 8AM on Sunday so we can get to a distant hiking location. So I keep my setup as simple as possible. Fold and go is my goal.

If I stayed places for longer, I would liket the benefits of the cover too. Maybe the Velcro mount trick would work.

I wanted to update this thread. About a month ago I installed a reversible fan replacing the stock fantastic fan in the t21dmhw. Then i added the fantastic fan cover and am loving it.

We had flooding rains eariler this week and my vent cover was opened all the way but the cover prevented any water from getting in. I was amazed how well it worked.

I am very happy I did the mods. Click image for larger version
