Awning Mod

Since day 1 with my Trilogy, the wiring for the awning lights has been a pain in the butt. In the first picture you can see how the wire hangs down, just waiting to get caught as the roller goes in/out. Happened once and fortunately I caught it in time.

After much thought I came up with a fairly straight forward solution that took all of about 15 minutes, with most of that time digging out the ladder and putting it away.

In this picture (zoom in for a better view) I drilled a hole about 1/2" in from the edge, in each section of the roller tube cover. I then put a small wire tie through the hole, around the wire, pulled it snug, and clipped the end off the wire tie. No more ugly wire hanging down and those adhesive Velcro pieces falling off in the heat.

Awning Mod

I just ripped the original LED and wiring out altogether. I replaced it with a better LED strip mounted just along under the awning's metal frame mounted to the Trilogy. Now no more worrying about whether the lights are on or off when the awning is rolled up and as an added benefit I can use the light to create a nice glow down the side of the camper even with the awning in. Because the LED stays put, the awning rolling out and in doesn't create any wiring problems anymore either.

kwoodrg,

Thanks for the input. Do you have a link to the lighting strip you ordered for the replacement? I think I like your idea a lot better.

I like that modification. It would definitely be a plus to use the lights with the awning in.

John, this is the LED strip I used.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Although beware that although it works fantastic and I have had no problems with this LED strip since installation back in January or so, it is a very high amp draw light set that uses SMD 5050 LEDs. In may case that means that since the front cap LEDs are wired on the same circuit, I cannot run both at the same time. This is not a problem for me because I never use the front lights. I discovered the problem however because my son turned them on once and it popped the shared fuse. So, I just instructed everyone to never turn on those front cap lights again. If you order a non-super bright version of LEDs (that use SMD 3528 LEDs for example) then you won't have that problem.

Used 3M outdoor double sided tape on mine. Need to be able to replace the strip lights when they go bad.
