Draft under steps

There is a cold draft that comes through the vented area under the steps. Our bay area is kept warm with two 75 watt lights. Would it be okay to put foam or aluminum foil or the like on the back of the vents?

Sorry for being MIA for awhile.......I also noticed this, but if you are using the furnace I would recommend NOT blocking them off as they are technically used for cold air return to the furnace, but if you are not using furnace I would be ok to cover them , I use a section of memory type foam wrapped in material that closely matches the interior to cover them when we are not running the furnace, it seems to work pretty well

When I posted this, we had NO intentions of using the furnace. Now it has become necessary as we are trying to thaw our water pump. It is frozen. Why did they install the water pump in the back where it is exposed? That makes no sense as the pump is usually near the hw tank and can be kept thawed with heat to the bay area. These manufacturers never camp, do they?

So here goes another thread.

There is a hole in the heater duct near the water heater. There are others as well.
