Kitchen Pantry

Like many others, our Trilogy came with a swing out shelf system that would store very few items. As a Christmas present, my talented brother built a real pantry that is just fantastic. I totally recommend that any of you with the piano-hinged shelving, get one of these built.

Photo one is the empty closet; photo two is the self standing pantry; photos three and four show how it looks inserted. Note we had to remove the door shelves They left behind a massive amount of glue. Any suggestions on how to remove the glue without removing the door finish?

There's a product called "goof off", it's used to remove paint and other grime without hurting the finish. It would probably work.

Do the trays have 'stops' so they will not be sliding in and out and hitting the doors when going down the road?

Re: stops. Not really, but they are built so close to the doors, they cannot move more than one inch. I will watch on our next move to see if there are any marks.

Yes, it was a fantastic present. He made the bottom drawer 12" so that I could put my large bottles there - oil, water, etc. What I actually did, however, was put my big pots there which left the cabinet under the stove top empty. That's where I put the big heavy bottles.

You could put a catch in the back of each slide drawer.

No.
I suggest that you sand the face of the interior framing and stain it "blonde" to match the new wood, leaving the panels stock.

When I ordered my Trilogy I asked the factory to change our pantry from the cubbies (3850RL) to a dual set of sliding drawers. We have since seen a 2014 with the dual configuration and really like it. Can't wait to get ours. The cubbies just seemed to be too small and a waste.

Yours looks like a great idea as well.

We have seen the dual sets and they appear very nice. We bought our Trilogy off the lot and didn't have a clue what we were doing until we moved in two days after seeing our first Trilogy. One advantage/disadvantage to ours is my brother REALLY built it to hold anything I load - which makes it heavy. We were underweight so it is okay.

A big plus for you is that I would imagine you can open one door at a time - I have to open both. But we love it and are amazed at how much fits in there!

Try warm / hot water on a rag to remove the glue, you'll probably have to scrape it off, but you never know...

More than likely you'll have to sand it off and re-finish

We solved three problems with one solution. My brother cut 1/4 inch from the depth of the little door cabinets. He also added on shelf between each of the existing shelves. Now:
(1) The drawers will not move in transit
(2) The glue is no longer a concern
(3) There is now a designated space for all of DH's spices that he uses for his grilling and smoking. (I don't want anything to hamper his ability to cook!)

Wonderful mod. JD

I am fairly certain my brother said the top drawer is 10", the next 3 are 9", and the bottom drawer is 12" (to accommodate my tall soup pot). The wood is all 1/2" which is a lot stronger than what was in there. It will hold any can goods with no problem. He did tell me that this one, as in the one he built for his own stick house, needs to have lighter items at the front of the drawers. He built a base to go on the floor first. The entire thing is enclosed in a stand along cabinet (see original photos) because there was nowhere to attach drawer slides.

Hope this helps: post pictures when you do yours. Good luck.

JD

One last note about our pantry mod. This is how it looks now that my woodworker cut down the depth of the shelves and added extra to the one side. He left the other side as is for larger spice jars. Of course, this would not have been necessary if we had included them in the measurements but we originally thought we did not want the door shelves. They are making a great spice rack.

(Note the portable Induction Cooktop to the right of the photo. All of our cooking is done in the microwave convection oven, the induction cooktop, or the smoker. Don't even know if the burners work on the stove!)

JD and JJ,

Agree with you on the induction cooktop! I feel the inset gas burners are just a crumb catcher so I use our Burton induction stove every day. Disadvantage of the induction unit would be if we're boondocking but otherwise, out with the inset gas range.
