Just spoke with a friend that took an old tank to be refilled and certified (tank was from early 60s and used for a lead melting pot- had top facing fitting). Had to sand and wirebrush it then paint it white. Took it back after cleaning and painting. Supplier put a special test gauge on it, still had some propane in it yet, and it tested satisfactorily.

Price was minimal. I stay away from the exchange locations with having good propane service company nearby.

We used to get our tanks re-certified, (here in Ontario, Canada) by a local dealer.
He removed the valve, inspected the tank interior and replaced the valve with a new one, for 10.00 plus the cost of a refill on our 30 pound tanks.
I understood that it was the valve that our regulatory people were concerned about, after 10 years.
The filling stations I go to still check the dates on the cylinders here in Ottawa and I saw the tech. refuse to fill one expired tank at the start of BBQ season.

Took my 20 lb tank to Ferrelgas. $25 for a recertification and filling.

As mentioned above, they were 12 yrs, went to 10, went back to 12.

Hope you picked a good one. And BTW, you didn't get a full tank of gas.

Nobody does. They need to leave room for heat expansion.

Jay, what Rockfordroo was stating, is you only got a cylinder with 15 pounds of propane in it when you exchanged it...vs he got a cylinder with the total allowable 20 pounds of propane when he got his refilled.

This thread explains it all.

Here in Canada it’s cheaper to buy a new tank at Costco than to get a recertification. And yes as already stated 10 years max before replacement or recertification.

Same here. Had both on my old TT recertified for $10/each. The tech said one might not pass, but it did. Something about a ring issue. I did let the new owner know just so he knows.

No, motorhome cylinders/tanks are a little different and heavier gauge. These are called ASME cylinders and do not need recertification.

this may be helpful....or not, lol

Cylinder Recertification - Country Hearth Toledo, Ohio

on a side note, I scored a 10 pound tank at a garage sale for a buck and it was full!! Downside, it had the old style valve that hand the internal female thread. No one will fill it once it's empty. I did buy an adapter so I can use what propane is in it. Im thinking it's not worth the money to get it re-done and not sure it can be since they'd have to change the valve and some other mods.

I take my old 20# tanks that are ready for recerts in for exchange. Almost all the ones I have received are within 3 years old on their certs. Far easier to do it that way than to take it to get certified or buy a new tank. You are losing a few bucks because they don't fill the tank full but that is way cheaper than s $25 recert.

Will I have trouble getting them refilled?

Anyone get their tanks recertified?

Love to hear about it.

I have had several bottles certified no big deal if they are in good physical condition and have the triangle shaped" no overfill valves " have been charged
$5-7.50. they will place a new sticker on the tanks...if tanks are in bad shape
I don't know...good luck..

$10 for a recertification. use a marker to write your name on the tank, leave it overnight, come back next day and it has a recertification label on it and it is full. pay the $10 plus the cost of the propane.

I had mine done free at our local Farmers CO-OP. I asked how much and he said nothing. I buy diesel fuel etc there. All they do is check the valve and roll them around and look for deep rust marks. Basically it's a rip off.

we had one and still have one more to recert.. in mn its 10 years, then can recert every 5 years. depending on who you buy a tank from, it can be 45 to 125 for the tank and then whatever it is to fill.

it cost us 15$ to recert.. but its good for 5 years now.. we will likely have to recert our other one i about 2 more trips or less.
