40lb propane on TT

My current Rockwood has twin 30lb tanks. I have several 40lb tanks that I would like to use but I havent seen tank covers for those. Does anyone else use these? I have F350 so tongue weight isnt that much of a factor to me.

Before doing any modification and using 40 lbs tank on your trailer , I would make sure that it would be legal to have these for transportation as per your intention. Most states and provinces would have a maximum permissable amount of propane that a vehicle can carry before transportation of dangerous regulation goods applies. Just something to think about.

I did not know that every fifth wheel has 2-40 lbs propane tanks, so I guess there is no issue.

By the way this is the features of your fifth wheel:

ELECTRICAL/HEATING/AC

12V battery disconnect
30 amp service
55 amp electrical converter
13,500 BTU central air conditioner
Double 30 lb LP bottles with auto change over
VIEW MORE
31,000 BTU energy efficient furnace
GFI circuit
Awning light receptacle with switch
Residential halogen lighting in living area ceiling
LED lighting in living area ceiling
Six-way one-touch remote for awning, slide-out and landing gear

Never heard of 40 lb tanks

And yet they make them!
Seems weird to have 30's and 40's

2 Gallons difference. 30# has 8 gal a 40# has 10. Tare on a 30 is 26# so it would weigh approx. 56# full a 40 weighs 32# so 72# full. If weight is an issue get the aluminum tanks.

40lb Propane Tanks

I installed 40lb tanks on my last TT. The cover was hard to find but I finally found one. The longer rod is another story. I could not find one so I purchased a round rod and cut it to length. I threaded the ends and it worked great. I now have a Windjammer so I can't do anything with this model but I would up grade if I could. I didn't have any problems having the 40s on the TT Frank

Personally, I use two 20# tanks with a 3rd tank as a spare in the bed of the truck. More than once, when I was using our class B, I had to drive 30 to 40 miles one way to get the tank filled. On a Sunday, it can be almost impossible in some locations.

Now, with my 20# tanks, if I can't find a nearby place to fill them, I can always find someplace to swap them.

I don't know what I was thinking saying 5th wheels have 2 40s. They have 2 30s. I should know, I have one. But I'm not sure what those specs are you are calling mine. Lots of that stuff is incorrect.

I have a 34 ft Avion TT that I purchased new. It came with twin 40# aluminum tanks. They are mounted on the tongue in front of the battery box. It also has an aluminum cover for the tanks. I think I have seen Airstream TT with 40# tanks.

I have 3 40# tanks in my 5th wheel and that's the way it came from the dealer. I have a propane generator so I needed the extra propane.

I am including a link for nationwide State Road Laws. I've scrolled through the whole thing. It appears that states that have tunnels have restrictions about propane traveling through those tunnels. I can only find one state - Texas - that lists the size of tanks. There you can only transport two 30 pound tanks or one 40 pound tank.

There might a better source somewhere else though.

I was not aware there might be restrictions on total propane. At one point I was carrying the twin 30's on the tongue, a 20 in the bed of the truck (for the portable fire pit) and about 3 of those 1# disposable tanks.

Don't Get Caught!

I'm thinking it's like the towing a propane tank through a tunnel issue. It would only come up if a LEO happened to stop you coming out of a tunnel. They could add on the charge for violation of the state limits.

Plus there are restrictions when using ferries. BC ferries allow two 30# tanks on the trailer and a 20# tank in the TV to be used for a BBQ.
