Barbecue conversion

Can I just disconnect the regulator from my barbecue and add a quick connect fitting to use it with my trailer?

Depending on what model grill you have, yes, you may be able to just replace the regulator hose with a quick disconnect. Some grills use a higher pressure and may need to change out a jet. Others have done this.

Take a close look at the male quick connect pigtail. The Camco one is most likely the one that will connect properly to the female connector on the TT which has a flow control feature. I used a Mr. Heater one from CW and although the O.D. mated with the female disconnect OK but, it wouldn't fit in all the way and lock in place. I discovered that Mr. Heater had soldered a bushing in the end, flush with the insertion end of the pigtail. I had to remove and reposition it in like position to the one on my outside stove which worked.
For a Weber Q, once the regulator was off, it required a Brass bushing 1/8 NPTF x 1/4 NPTF to couple to the Mr. heater hose which was 1/4 NPTM on both ends at the desired length. The pigtail had to have the appropriate 1/4 MPTF thread to go on the hose.

Depends on whether your grill is high pressure (throw away tanks) or low pressure (20# or similar tank).

If its high pressure it needs to be connected between the tank and the RV regulator using the "regulator" that came with it as it also acts as the temperature control. If its low pressure as in a standard patio grill yes as long as you use the proper fitting etc to get to your quick disconnect.

Hope this helps

PS There are low pressure table top units available, I found out at Home depot and Lowes sells one also. they usually have control knobs on the grill itself not on the hose.

Ok barbecue was Nexgrill bought at Costco. Removed hose and regulator and installed 3/8 FIP X 1/4 FIP coupler (Lowes) and a quick connect (from local trailer dealer) made sure to use yellow gas tape. Tried it just now and works great. Thanks to all for the advice and have a great year camping

I'm not sure I agree that throw away tanks (1 lb.) are high pressure and 20 lb. grill cylinders are low pressure. I realize pressure is relative to temperature but at 70º I'm pretty sure the pressure is the same. (around 145 PSI) They are both liquefied propane vessels.

If they were as you suggested, folks wouldn't (or couldn't) fill a 1 Lb. disposable from a 20 pounder with a fill adapter.

Add.. there are many folks (including me) who simply use a hose that has a 20 Lb. male fitting on one end and a "disposable bottle" male fitting on the other so they can use a 20 lb. tank rather than a throw away on a propane powered device. I don't think that would be possible if the tanks were different pressures.

My terminology refers to operating pressure of the appliance. Disposable bottle unit usually operate at more than 11" WC (6.35 oz) hence hi pressure. You are correct the pressure in the tanks should be the same at any given pressure thou at 70 deg it would be 127 psi approx. Also is is illegal and very un safe to refill throw away bottles as you cannot tell when they are full and can over fill then, which can lead to relief valve releasing when pressure/temperature climbs.

OK thanks.
BTW... they now make a refillable and legally transportable, (where the real illegality was) 1 lb bottle.
See it HERE.

Folks do use a valve called a "MAC" to fill the little green bottles. I have no personal knowledge of a bottle being overfilled and the pressure relief lifting I'm sure it could happen.

How would you regulate temperature?
