Coleman grill and propane quick connect

We just bought a Coleman Sportster grill that takes the small disposable propane bottles. I have a hose to connect it to the quick connect on the RV, however it will not light. Do I need an additional adapter to make this work? Anyone else deal with this and have the solution?

Thanks!

I think that the problem is that your trying to get gas flow through two pressure regulators. The quick connect on your RV is after the pressure regulator so you already have low pressure gas at that point. When you connect your hose to that grill, the grill also has a pressure regulator and is expecting high pressure gas at that point. You're feeding it low pressure gas. As a result --- no gas flow. One of the pressure regulators need to go ---- or give up on the quick connect on the RV and feed the Coleman grill with a separate 20lb. bottle if you don't like the small bottles.

Yep, your grill is high pressure and the trailer quick connect is low pressure.
Not going to work without some modifications.

Thanks, that's exactly what it's looking like. So, what's the point of having the quick connect if you can't use it? Guess we'll just be carrying an extra propane tank on our trips.

I have a coleman road trip. I took off the regulator and put a kit on I bought from propanegear and now use it off the low pressure outlet on my windjammer. The kit with a 12 ft hose was $59.

I've never seen a coleman sporter grill so I don't know if you can get the regulator off or not.

Because it's for the optional bbq grill, not for aftermarket high pressure stoves/grills that use the disposable propane tanks.

Remove the grill regulator and hook the hose directly to the grill. My Colman Road Trip works great off the RV quick connect.

You'll need to remove the regulator on your coleman grill and add parts to allow use of the low pressure quick connect.

I've got these parts on order for my Weber portable:

1/8" to 1/4" reducer

1/4" male-to-quick connect fitting

10' long quick connect hose

Here is a link to a Youtube video for the Coleman grill conversion.

I did the same thing, except I also added the female quick connect fitting back to my regulator so that I can take the grill tailgating and use the #1 bottles. Works like a champ!

Quick disconnect for Coleman grill

I did this very thing to,my Coleman, and it works great. You do have to take the regulator off of the Coleman end, and go to You Tube and it'll show exactly what you need to get for replacement. I got all the fittings I needed at O'Rileys Auto Parts.

Unfortunately the regulator is built into the burner control. I contacted Coleman to see if there was an after-market controller. Their answer was no, and their suggested solution was to convert the RV quick connect to high pressure. Uh, no, that's not gonna happen. I'll chalk this up to a lesson learned. I will check out propanegear though and see if they have something. Thanks all!

Why not just buy a non-regulated grill for RVs and start enjoying the great outdoors.

Anticipation, is keepin him waiting!

I do not have an issue with the extra tank.

I also have a lantern that I use on top of the gas tree.

Well, had I know this ahead of time that would have been a novel idea. It doesn't exactly say on the box, this will not work with... Those of us not knowledgeable about such things assume if the connectors fit it should work...

Looks like you just need to get the connections to attach a hose to it that hooks up to a propane tank and carry an extra tank.

If you have a selector valve on your propane tanks - i.e. have the ability to run from an individual tank instead of running from both - why not disconnect one tank from the selector valve and hook your grill into the 20# tank?

If you can't avoid the regulator on the BBQ, you can use this to tee into the propane tank.
http://www.amazon.com/Camco-59103-Pr.../dp/B0014JKDB2

This connects to the propane tank, then you connect the pigtail from the trailer's regulator to one side and the supplied 12' hose goes to your BBQ.

...or just carry an extra propane tank.

As long as this is how you are going to use your gas grill permanently, it's a simple fix. You have to remove the regulator from the grill and adapt directly into the grill. You could keep the regulator handy in case you have to change back to bottle for some reason. It will work fine once it no longer "double regulated"
