It needs to come out of the tray and hooked to the plastic clip on the fin. The top should be even with the top of the clip. Higher is colder but take about 4-6 hours to make a change.

It should have thermistor sensor clipped to the fins in the upper part of the refrigerator section, with a small cable. I suspect it may have gone bad, which will cause the problem you are experiencing. You can order one on the Internet and it takes about 2 minutes to replace your self, just unplugs.

In my part of world ice freezes at 32 degrees. Bacteria stops growing at 40 degrees. Works for me.

When we travel, I turn the fridge on auto, pack it full of cold and frozen food with a couple frozen gallon jugs of water. At the end of the day things seem quite cold, frozen stuff still frozen. Works for us. We don't have the option of starting the fridge a day in advance.

Actually, RV refrigerators need to have air space for air flow to cool.
The freezer, not so much, but pack that fridge tight and it will actually warm up inside.
Most especially down here in the desert heat.
I bought a small battery operated fan at an RV store here in Yuma and tried it out last month in Sedona...
Put it on the bottom in the middle of the fridge and didn't pack everything as tightly (except for road travel time, of course) and the fridge was running about 5 degrees cooler than without it.

Not saying that we pack the fridge tightly because I don't pay attention to how the DW packs the fridge (pick your battles  )......... but we have never had a cooling problem without a fan in the summer, beach humid temps of 95-100 degrees.
6 campers 35 years.

That doesn't help much on the first couple of days camping...
I've seen campers that pack every single air space in their RV fridge...then wonder why it isn't cold!
Now, if you have a residential refrigerator in your motorhome, then that is different!
Pack that baby tight!
RV fridges (Norcold and Dometic) need to have air flow to cool.
