I'm in my 4th TT since the early 1970s and have always run with the frig on propane. It was "designed" to travel while on. Never heard of anyone having a problem from a frig being on except being fined for going through the Mobile AL Tunnel with the frig on.
I worry a great deal more about the cars coming at me at 70 mph and only separated by a paint stripe on the ground.
I say if it makes you feel all fuzzy inside to turn it off, then do so.
You are so right. I agree 100%. Especially the last sentence.
I turn mine off when traveling. Fridge is on electric a few days before we leave and it stays plenty cold for what we bring. However, the farthest we've traveled so far is only 4 hours. May not be much help, but that's probably the way I'd roll on longer trips as well. :shrug:
there have been some dangerous furnaces over the years. the duotherm 900 and 901 from 1984 to 1988 would mix the lp gas with the air with a blower wheel and then through a ceramic burner head. they used a refractory lining that would still burn up and then burn the bonnet. but a furnace still has a bonnet and the outside casing to protect against the flame. dometic and norcold both have had cores that were failing (leaking)and recalled in the past few years. the flame, even though small, sits within inches of a wooden cabinet. the flue exits within inches as well. the core, when heated, operates at up to 600 pounds of pressure and contains hydrogen gas and anhydrous ammonia. ammonia is flammable in concentrations of 15 to 28 percent in air. the burner chamber (close proximity to flame) is a common area to leak. that is what makes the refer a concern to me. ive done the recalls and seen what parts go in. extra sheet metal around the burner. one or 2 thermal cutoffs to kill the power to the fridge. ive replaced dozens of refer cores over the years. had lots of leakers that didnt catch fire. of course I didnt see the ones that did...

To each his own because it is their camper and their life.
And if they feel safe doing it, I won't tell them that they are wrong. It's worked for them for years and they haven't had a problem.
And yes, it could very well catch fire sitting at a campsite.
I'm just not going to do it because it makes me feel fuzzy when I don't.
almost a million dometic units recalled. industry insider says boiler chamber tubing unchanged, just a external fix. norcold says 80% recall compliance rate "good". I remember the 1200 lrim norcold recall. first they just sent out lower wattage heat elements. then when that didnt fly, a full blown recall on cores. the chimney siren makes more sense now than it did when I first got involved with this thread. some decisions you make for yourself, others affect the entire family. i think Ill spend my lotto money to build one, better odds and potentially higher rewards...
