Problem lighting pilot style HW heater

Hello,

I have an older WnP toyhauler. I have to manually light my pilot for the water heater to get going. The problem I'm having is after I light the pilot it takes a long time to ignite the propane. So what happens is I light the pilot. Shut the door and then a little later you hear the "explosion" of the propane lighting. But it takes so long that the force of the gas lighting blows out the pilot. The only way it will work is if after lighting the pilot I leave the door open. The heater ignites and doesn't blow out the pilot. It makes me a little nervous also.
