Propane Alarm

Hello Scrapper, I checked the batteries the way you suggested and to my amazement I do have 1 bad battery. Do you know if something bad would have happened if I would have continued use them this way, also can I replace just the one battery or do they need to be changed as a set. It’s down to 11.23 now,Also the date on battery is 8/13 is that about the life of a INTERSTATE B ATTERY. Thanks Click image for larger version

Using a bad battery along with a good battery will cause the good battery to go bad too as the good battery is being drained by the bad one. In other words, it is a vicious cycle between trying to charge and discharge at the same rate. It's like putting a dead battery with a new one in a flashlight, the dead one acts as a load on the new one causing the new one to fail.

Any time you have to replace batteries connected together the should be done at the same time. The older battery will always be the weak link. Change both at the same time with the same type and group. You and your RV will be happier.

That is a 5yo battery. Is the date the same on the good one or is it newer?

Hello Scrapper, They are both 8/13, this is my first RV and I only had it 2 years. It’s good to know the correct way to check things, I also learned today that these 2 batteries aren’t the ones that start the engine. I just assumed they were because when I open the hood there’s no battery, it’s under the floor board somewhere. I appreciate everyone’s help. Thanks Greg

Both batteries being 5 years old it's time for new ones as you don't know how the previous owner took care of them. Having one battery with a bad cell, the other is probably not far behind. You could take them to a auto parts store or battery center and have them load tested. They usually test them for free. But they will tell you the same as I am.

Hello Scrapper, I agree, I’ll Pickup 2 new ones this week. I thinking of getting 2 from COSTCO and I read there suppose to have the same specifications as the ones I’m replacing and there only $80 compared to the $120 ones I’m taking out. There both INTERSTATE BATTERIES but the Costco ones are black and the ones I’m replacing are Green. Thanks Click image for larger version

We were just out this weekend and the alarm kept going off. The batteries were fine, 12.4vdc. I did read in another thread that it might be on the fridge circuit. I am going to check that. Why would they wire it that way?

12.4vDC is 80% so it's good. Propane alarm shouldn't activate unless voltage drops closer to 11.0vDC.

Looking at their own manual it says 8volts. I am going to see if it is on its own circuit. When the fridge fan turns on it could pull enough voltage down that makes it go off. I was on a ATV ride when it went off on my wife and she said in a few minutes it went off. So that story of it being hooked into the fridge circuit makes sense. will update soon.

Propane alarms do not only detect propane. If your wife was cleaning or you have a dog with a gas problem, those can set off the alarm. Sewer smells can also set them off.

Mine went bad after 3 years old. Discovered that the detector will go off if and exhaust is near that side and running. Had a neighbors truck idling set it off.

If the starting battery in car drops below 9vDC when starting the battery should be replaced. Don't know the amperage drop when your refrigerator starts (I assume it's via an inverter) but a starter uses a lot of amps.

It shouldn't make any difference if it wired to the same circuit as the fridge. If the battery voltage is low enough when the fridge fan kicks on all 12v circuits will see the extra drop, even across the battery terminals.

if it is and the voltage drops below what the detector needs then the alarm will go off. I checked the batteries when it went off and they were at or above 12.4vdc. I noticed this time out that the fridge did kick on more often than before, even though the temps were around 40-75F
