Propane Generator Issue

I'm sure there's a thread related to this but I can't find one so sorry.

Our 2017 Forester 2401WS has a 3500 watt propane generator with 16 hours of run time on it. I've run it every month since new for 30-60 minutes.

We recently traveled from our home in central Oregon (3400 feet ASL) to Wisconsin and back. In Wisconsin (600 feet ASL) we tried to start it. It started but backfired and stalled within a minute every time we tried to start.

I looked for possible obstructions, IE mud daubers, but not sure I looked in all the right places.

We're back home in Oregon now and, after a few pops and poops, it's running fine.

Could it be an altitude issue, and if so, how would one compensate when traveling to lower/higher elevations?

It may help to get an answer to your question if you list the type of generator you have (not size, name)
