Propane Leak?

We smell propane, but cannot find the leak. It smells the worst around the regulator. We are loaded up and ready to go camping, but now are worried about leaving thinking we have a possible leak. We have filled a spray bottle with dish. detergent and no bubbles are appearing. Any ideas of how to find the leak?

I had a regulator go bad once. It was leaking at the empty indicator. I like never have found it. I finally just happened to squirt some solution over it and saw it bubble. Camping World has them and they're easy to change.

Narrow down the location using your nose (sniffer). Use the soapy solution, and soap everything. May help to run a gas appliance (as long as it's far away from the leak if possible). Make sure you are squirting the soap on the connetions, fittings, regulator, propane cylinder heads (valve). Small leaks are hard to find, easy to smell. Keep at it, or take it to a professional.

Just found this forum, so pardon the late reply. We have a 2000 Wildwood T29 that I pull with a 2001 Ford 7.3 liter turbo diesel with 4 door crew cab and 8 foot bed. Just love the truck.

Now the propane leak. If you look into the valve on your tank and compare it to a valve on a new tank in a store, you may see what is shown on the 2 attached pics. The black gasket material should cover the inner brass ring of the valve as shown in the first pic. In the second pic you can see that the gasket has been torn off the inner brass ring seat and this valve will leak a small amount of propane. It was my experience that I could not replace the gasket, it has to be factory installed, so the valve needs to be replace. Rather than replace the valve, I swapped the tanks at a propane dealer (not a service station or hardware store.)

Look at your tanks and then go to Home Depot or a store like that and look at a new tank. I hope this has been helpful.

Sometimes, when regulators go bad, they leak out the vent. This is a large opening with a screen over it at the bottom (big end) of the regulator that is sometimes hard to detect leaks with soap solution.

Well, this weekend we found out the 2 stage propane regulator is bad. Didn't catch the problem in time and drained 2 30# tanks in the process. It looks like there's several brands out there. The one we have is an ASC brand. So we want to stay away from that one.

Amazon has a Camco model 59005 for $31. Camping World carries a Cavagna for $57. The both appear to have an automatic change over and let you take the empty tank out without interrupting the gas flow from the full tank. Any suggestions?
