Propane system on class c

I have a 31' Forester class c and every thing works fine with the under belly propane tank but if I connect a 20lb tank it does not work. Every thing will light but will not continue to burn. Is the 20lb tank to small or do you think it could be another problem.

Size shouldn't matter.

A leak in one of the lines could be allowing the pressure to drop below a critical level. Or the regulator may have failed (that would be the first thing I would check). It could be pretty easy to diagnose the regulator by removing it from the RV and hooking it up to your backyard BBQ (assuming threading is the same, etc.)

A regulator that allows too much pressure through would be a problem just as much as (if not more than) one that is too restrictive.

What's the outside temperature where your rig is at? If its cold enough, the 20# bottle isn't going to be able to put out enough propane to maintain pressure. heck, a 30# probably would work either.

You see, the colder the tank is, the harder it is for the propane to vaporize thus why you can light but not maintain a flame. A larger tank will have a larger diameter this more surface area and consequently more available gas vapor.

The temperature was about 60 when I was working on the system. I thought it was the tank so I tried another tank and it done the same thing. The gauge that shows how much propane is in the tank is new and will hold in the green until I light the water heater then it drops to bottom red. The hose to the RV is old so could it be clogged.

Where are you connecting your 20 lbs propane tank on your RV?

There is an auxiliary tank connection on the main line from the under belly tank.

Be careful guys. As a retired Fire Chief, propane is one of the most dangerous things to work with. Seek expert advice from a propane-certified technician. Lines may be clogged.

OK, just asking, as some of these are for feeding exterior appliances only.....hopefully someone with same setup will chime in to help.
