Propane Theft How do I secure it

I have a 2019 Tracer with typical propane set up, dual tanks. Went down to the storage lot Monday after returning from a Thanksgiving trip the previous Saturday to remove and refill the tank we used on the 6 day trip. Surprise!! The full tank had been disconnected and was gone! I am considering a chain with strong lock over the hard plastic cover but that looks tacky. Any suggestions for a good secure method to prevent a occurrence is appreciated.

Someone here had a pic of a hole drilled through the holder and the tightening nut through which a lock could be inserted, to stop someone from being able to loosen it.
Had it saved to remind me but now can’t find it [emoji849]

It's not a good thing to lock down propane tanks where the fire department can't get to them. It would be better to just take them out of the RV when you leave it.

However, if they stole LP with it in a storage yard, there's a good chance that next time they'll break in. Maybe it's time to be looking for a different storage place.

You would think they would have security cameras you could check. Later RJD

Propane Theft

I agree with the chain/fire department issue, but thinking the trailer will be gone before a VFD arrives. And if they are quick bolt cutters will cut the lock/chain. Unfortunately no video YET, but manager thinks he knows who took the tank and is pursueing this. He is also adding some type video surveillance. And for now, the other cylinder is in my storage shed. And, until the security is better both will be in the storage shed. Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

I'm sure whoever took it really needed the propane. To make meth. People suck.

I would just chain it down. If a trailer is on fire what fireman is going to disconnect the propane tanks. Doubt it will ever happen. I will bet it happened to Ricky's trailer next door or Julian's Fifth Wheel.

There’s only so much you can do, especially when you consider that a thief needs only one tool to steal whatever he wants that is in or on your RV.

Chain or cable lock the LP tanks (not the cover) to the trailer frame.

I've been doing this for years...

Chances are the person who stole your tanks wasn't carrying bolt cutters and just jumped on the tanks since they were an easy target.

Pad lock or cable lock are decent deterrents. The battery powered disk grinder can open them all pretty quickly but they are very noisy. Donno if the noise would be a deterrent to a thief or not.... maybe.

With the right disk, the noise won’t last for long. I suppose the main deterrent to consider would be how many people are around and awake.

I know a lot of "useless people" and be that as they may, they are not thieves. How about we use the term "scumbag" ?

Knowing that many would rather steal than work, when I lock anything I think of it as a deterrent. Maybe it will make them move on to an easier target. But let's face it, if they want it they are going to take it, and since it seems like we now have a revolving door policy at the police station it's just going to get worse. Lock it up and hope for the best!

For winter storage, I remove the tanks and store outside at our home. It would be a pain to do this for each camping trip. Sorry for your loss. The fire department will not want them locked up. That is why there are no key locks on the propane door hatch. In case of emergency, the tanks, behind doors or on the trailer tongue, are suppose to be accessible to any concerned person to have access.

I heard talk about locking propane bottles. I asked my sun-in-law about this, he's a fireman. He said if the fire department wanted to get to my propane bottles, they have bolt cutters to get to them. I now have both my bottles locked.
Everyone is right, find another storage place for your rv. Good luck

It is ok to lock the tanks to something...they just can't be locked inside of a cabinet door.

In other words...they need to be accessible to blast with a fire extinguisher!

Got me thinking now, never considered the possibility. Probably look at some way to lock the tank hold down wing nut from turning, like an outboard motor clamp lock. Just a thought.
