Purge propane tank ????

I do remember buying a new tank for my home BBQ at Ace Hardware and do not remember him purging it but the tank has never been a problem. When filling it it took the correct gallons to fill as I recall.

So does this post mean that if they put 7 gallons in 30 lb bottle, with a couple of short bleeds that the tanks are nearly full......?????

A gallon of LP weighs 4.34 lbs @ 60°f, so properly filled cylinders should hold as such-
20 lb ÷4.23= 4.7281 gallons
30 lb ÷ 4.23= 7.0921 gallons
40 lb ÷ 4.23 = 9.4562 gallons
100lb ÷ 4.23= 23.6406 gallons

The empty tank weight should be stamped on the bottle.

Do you know that if you bring a tank to a tank exchange system at the big box stores or a convenience store that you my only get 15-17 lbs of propane in the 20 lb tank? That is their standard fill and charge as much as a 20lb fill at the propane company!! You can't always get 20lbs of propane in the tank due to outside temps. The propane exchange companies fill them at a lower level to comply standard fills. Somewhere down the line they found out people didn't pay attention to the amount of propane they were buying in each tank. If you don't believe me, next time you go to Walmart or etc check out the weight on the tank they are selling you. You will see that your getting 3/4 of what you thought you bought. They didn't advertise 20lb of propane, just a 20lb tank with 15lbs of propane.

I've heard that too, but ive never got one from them personally.
For me it's less than $10 to fill a 20lb at my propane company and those exchange places are usually $20-30 if i recall correctly.
But they have to haul them around and service them too, and you can get them after hours usually too, so i guess your paying for the convenience!

It's like buying a can of Pepsi out of a machine for a $1 or getting a 12 pack at the grocery for $5. It's convenience.

I think the standard at our Ace is; if its empty or 1/4 full the cost is flat rated at $28 for the 30lb bottle. I was setback the first time I went their because they do check the weight stamp and place the tank on a scale. However, after the teenager hit the pump lever and couldn't find the screwdriver I decided it was not my office and went back inside. I just leave the bottle next to the charging station now.
